Rafael Márquez Álvarez [ rafaˈel ˈmaɾkes ˈalβaɾes ] (born February 13, 1979 in Zamora de Hidalgo , Michoacán ) is a former Mexican soccer player who was last under contract with Atlas Guadalajara in the Mexican MX League and has been sports director there since 2018.

Career

society

Marquez began his professional football career with Atlas Guadalajara in the highest Mexican football class . He made his debut at the age of 17. After a total of 77 games for Club Atlas, he moved to AS Monaco in France for the 1999/2000 season for 4.5 million euros . Here Márquez established himself and became French champions with Monaco in the first year. After four years he moved to FC Barcelona in Spain in 2003 for a transfer fee of 5.25 million euros . In his first season he made 21 appearances and finished second with his team in the Spanish league . In his second season, Márquez was mostly set up as a defensive midfielder, as there was a staff shortage in this position, and became Spanish champions. In 2006 he won the Champions League with Barcelona and was the first Mexican ever to win the most prestigious European club cup. After the 2006 World Cup, Márquez signed a new contract with Barcelona that should bring him around 24 million euros in four years. In November 2009, he extended his contract until 2012, but on July 31, 2010 he agreed with FC Barcelona to terminate his contract immediately.

In early August 2010, Marquez signed a contract with the New York Red Bulls from the US professional league Major League Soccer . He followed his former teammate from his time at Barcelona Thierry Henry . Márquez wore jersey number 4 for Red Bull. On August 9, 2010, he played for Red Bull for the first time in the 0-0 draw against Chicago Fire , and in his third game against Toronto FC he scored 1-0 (final score 4-1) his first goal.

After the 2012 season , Márquez agreed with the club to terminate his contract. He then moved back to his home country for Club León , with which he won the championship title in his home country for the first time in 2013 at Apertura .

At the end of his career he wanted to play again in Europe and in 2014 signed a one-year contract with the Italian Serie A club Hellas Verona . However, he did not end his career in Italy, but moved back to Mexico to his home club Atlas Guadalajara on January 1, 2016 . There he ended his active career in summer 2018 and became sports director.

National team

Márquez made his debut for the Mexican national team on February 5, 1997 at the age of only 17 in Mexico City against Ecuador , which the hosts won 3-1. Márquez took part in the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and in the 2005 Confederations Cup in Germany . At the 2006 World Cup , he led the Mexican national team as captain over Iran (3: 1), Angola (0: 0) and Portugal (1: 2) to the second round. Although he scored 1-0 against Argentina , the future opponents of the DFB-Elf , in the 6th minute, Mexico lost the game 2-1 after extra time and was eliminated from the tournament. Even after the World Cup, Rafael Márquez remained captain of the Mexican national team and is called Emperor of Michoacán in his homeland, based on Franz Beckenbauer .

At the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, Márquez scored the first goal for Mexico. In the opening game against the hosts , he scored in the 79th minute to make it 1-1.

On March 26, 2011, he made his 100th international match against Paraguay .

In 2014 he was with Mexico at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. In the group game against Croatia on June 23, 2014 in the Arena Pernambuco in Recife, he was elected Man of the Match with a 1: 3 win . In the round of 16 against the Netherlands, the yellow card against Rafael Márquez led to the decisive penalty and progression for the Netherlands.

Márquez also took part with Mexico at the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Again he reached the knockout phase, again he failed with Mexico in the second round. There they lost 2-0 to Brazil . For Márquez it was the fifth round of 16 at a World Cup, which no player had achieved before. After the tournament, he resigned from the Mexican national team.

Entanglement in drug trafficking

In August 2017, Márquez was one of 22 people accused by the United States of being a straw man in the international drug trade. For example, Raúl Flores Hernández is said to have laundered Márquez 'money from the drug cartel through several companies and foundations. According to a Mexican newspaper, Márquez is also said to have private contacts with the son of the now arrested Hernández, who is the godfather of Márquez's eldest daughter.

The US Treasury Department imposed sanctions on Marquez for money laundering.

Private

In March 2001, Rafael Marquez married the Mexican soap actress Adriana Lavat , with whom he has a son and a daughter. The couple separated in early 2007.
