Rainer Tobien (born October 20, 1941 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) is a former German basketball player and player- coach who was active from 1958 to 1983. With over 600 point games in the 1st and 2nd basketball league, the 1.88-meter-tall wing and construction player is the longest active Bundesliga player in Germany. He played his 600th league game in his 23rd season at the age of 40 in January 1981. Tobien was considered one of the best basketball shooters in Germany.

Career

Clubs as active players

At TSG 1846 Darmstadt, his very first team, Rainer Tobien made his debut in August 1958 with his first league game against Heidelberger TV. In 1966, when the top German division, the Bundesliga - was founded in two groups: North and South - he moved to BC Darmstadt. In the relegation playoff against 1860 Munich in Tübingen , at the end of the 1966/67 season, he scored 28 points and was hailed as the “savior of Darmstadt”.

First division TuSA Düsseldorf became his new club in 1968. In the struggle for the top places in the Bundesliga, against VfL Osnabrück and Düsseldorf ATV 77, the team was denied victory. TuSA Düsseldorf did not make the final round, although Tobien was by far the most successful scorer (20 and 35 points).

The next season (1969/70) the business administration student spent with the successful basketball university team of ASV Köln , which had its first season in the Bundesliga. As the promoted group in the north, the team surprisingly won against German basketball champions VfL Osnabrück (83:68). This cleared the way for the fourth ASV to reach the finals. The best shooter was again Rainer Tobien (24 points), "who shot from all cylinders and hit". In March 1970, the ASV won, with Tobien again as the best basket hunter (31 points), against USC Munich (97:71) and was thus in the final round of the German championship.

From 1970 to 1973 Rainer Tobien was a member of the Bundesliga team of VfL Osnabrück , which was among other things German basketball champion and DBB vice-cup winner from 1969. In this top team he played together with national players such as Klaus Weinand , Helmut Uhlig , Heinz Böttner, Eckhard Meyer, Helmut Posern and the American Ralph Ogden . This "top-class team" missed another win in the German championship in 1971 by a hair's breadth. During this time he also fought with other stars of the 60s and early 70s on the field for basket hits, such as B. with Bernd Röder , Dietrich Keller , Dieter Kuprella , Karl Ampt and Holger Geschwindner .

In 1973, due to a change in his career, he moved to Frankfurt / Main and Tobien moved to TG Hanau . At the end of the season, the Regionalliga promoted team surprisingly and straight away made the leap into the Bundesliga. The two basket shooters Rainer Tobien and the American Hubert Gibson played a major role in this success . In 1974, on the third day of the Bundesliga, he was in first place among the German basketball players (82 points), ahead of Gibson, Keller and Geschwindner. In 1975 he was there when the single-track 1st Bundesliga and the two-tier 2nd Bundesliga emerged, with the aim of concentrating the best efforts even more. Until the end of his time at TG Hanau in 1977, Rainer Tobien acted as an extremely successful basket scorer for his club in the games of the 1st and the new 2nd Bundesliga.

Clubs as player-coach

In the summer of 1977 Rainer Tobien (35 years old) became a trainer and also a player in the young men's team (average age 21 years) of the regional division TV Langen . Here player-coach Tobien and his troops marched purposefully in the direction of the Bundesliga. In 1978 TV Langen successfully defended its position as the leader of the regional league center. In the game against SKG Roßdorf, second in the table, their biggest rival, it was done. With coach Tobien, who was also involved as a player, TV Langen just won and made it to the second Bundesliga . In the same year, "Tobiens Giraffes" (the giraffe as the club's logo) defeated their strongest opponent, the first in the table, Frankfurter Eintracht, and had now risen to become the leaders of the second Bundesliga South. In 1979, on the last match day of the 2nd Bundesliga, the team of TV Langen managed to win over Wetzlar / Krofdorf (95:65). Player-coach Rainer Tobien had thus led his young team to the South German basketball championship.

In the summer of 1979 Rainer Tobien returned as a player-coach to the TG Hanau , which he had left as a player in 1977. In his second season as a player-coach, he and his team defeated one opponent after the other in the second Bundesliga group south. First division relegated FC Bayern Munich was defeated as well as FC Bamberg . TV Langen, where Tobien was previously the player-coach, also lost out. After SpVgg 07 Ludwigsburg also took first place, TG Hanau took the lead in the second Bundesliga group south. Now the unexpected chance for promotion to the first Bundesliga had come. It was his 23rd season in which Rainer Tobien played his 600th Bundesliga game in January 1981 (against TV Langen). 175 games were for the TG Hanau alone. In the 1982/83 season, the TG Hanau recorded further victories in the 2nd Bundesliga. So also in the game against TuS Aschaffenburg. The experienced and experienced player-coach Tobien was praised as the “man of the day” and the most successful player. He was four days before his 41st birthday at this game.

From 1983 to 1988 he was manager of the Bundesliga team at TV Langen.

review

Rainer Tobien, who was referred to as a “fossil” and “walking history book”, was able to get to know several generations of basketball players as a player and player -coach in his more than 20-year basketball career . In addition to the players of the 60s / 70s, he also knew pioneers of the 50s, such as Ossi Roth , Werner Lamade and Hannes Neumann .
