nature and environment

The Rauendahler Bach flows through the 218.1 hectare nature reserve Ruhraue / Wiener Weide / Die Ey / Hofstiepel . The stream is characterized by strong iron ocher precipitation and it flows for the most part in concrete basins. Despite these adverse conditions, its fauna is still relatively species-rich.

The sewage treatment plant south of the brook was used for the pit water from the former Friedlicher Nachbar colliery and the surrounding pit fields. Although coal has not been mined since 1961, the mine workings are still being drained. In 2002 he discharged 8,733,260 m³ of mine water with 1,829 tons of chloride from the peaceful neighbor colliery.
