Raymond James Boland

Raymond James Boland (born February 8, 1932 in Tipperary , Ireland - † February 27, 2014 in Cork , Ireland) was an Irish-American Roman Catholic bishop of Birmingham (1988-1993) and Kansas City-Saint Joseph (1993 -2005).

Life

Raymond Boland, the oldest of four brothers, attended a Christian Brothers school in Cork, southern Ireland. After his training at All Hallows College in Drumcondra (Dublin) he worked as a missionary ; at the same time he studied theology at University College Dublin . He was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Washington (USA) on June 16, 1957 . He served for James Aloysius Cardinal Hickey , later pastor at St. Hugh in Greenbelt, St. Michael and St. Camillus, both in Silver Spring. In the archbishopric he was assistant director for the youth department (1960–1975), diocesan secretary for Catholic education (1975–1981), delegate for communications, chancellor, moderator of the curia and vicar general . For two terms he was Chairman of the Council of Priests in the Archdiocese of Washington. In 1979 he was the coordinator of Pope John Paul II's visit to President Jimmy Carter in Washington.

He was by Pope Paul VI. Appointed Papal Honorary Chaplain (1973) and Papal Honorary Prelate .

Pope John Paul II appointed him Bishop of Birmingham on February 2, 1988 . He received his episcopal ordination from the Archbishop of Mobile , Oscar Hugh Lipscomb , on March 25, 1988; Co- consecrators were James Aloysius Cardinal Hickey , Archbishop of Washington, and Eugene Antonio Marino SSJ , Auxiliary Bishop of Washington.

He was named Bishop of Kansas City-Saint Joseph by John Paul II on June 22, 1993, and was installed in office on September 9, 1993. On May 24, 2005, Pope Benedict XVI. his early resignation for health reasons; he died in his Irish homeland of complications from cancer.

He has served in various offices in the United States Bishops' Conference , including Chairman of the Communications Commission. He got involved with Serra International and the Columbus Knights .

In 1986 he was invested in the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem . He has been the Conventual Chaplain of the Sovereign Order of Malta since 1994 . In 2010 he was awarded the Grand Cross “pro piis meritis” for his long-term commitment to the Order of Malta .

He was honored by the John Carroll Society . He has received honorary doctorates from Rockhurst University and Avila University . In 2005 he received the Bishop John England Award from the Catholic Press Association of the United States and Canada .

He was the older brother of John Kevin Boland , Former Bishop of the Diocese of Savannah, Georgia.
