history

Reed Smith was founded in Pittsburgh in 1877 by Philander C. Knox and James H. Reed. The two partners soon entered into a business relationship with the American billionaire and US Steel founder Andrew Carnegie , who laid the foundation for further corporate relationships . In 1922, following the entry of other partners, the firm took on the name Reed Smith Shaw & McClay until it was shortened as part of a rebranding in the early 2000s.

During the New Deal era, Reed Smith built a securities practice and her partner Ralph H. Demmler became chairman of the Securities and Exchange Commission . Since 1970, the firm has also engaged in a number of strategic mergers and acquisitions and new offices to grow into one of the largest law firms in the world. After numerous mergers and expansions within the United States , the law firm became transatlantic in 2001 and four years later opened offices in Paris and Munich , and later offices in France , Greece , the Middle East and Hong Kong .

Reed Smith today emphasizes its close proximity to industry within the leading commercial law firms and claims to represent 13 of 15 of the world's leading public and private banks, 25 of the world's 35 largest oil and gas companies and the world's three largest pharmaceutical and wholesale companies .
