Reinhold Johan von Fersen (* 1646 in Tallinn ; † December 10, 1716 in Stockholm ), from German Baltic nobility, was a military and statesman in the Swedish service. He was raised to the rank of count in 1712 and thus became the progenitor of the Swedish count family von Fersen. He was the son of Baron Hans von Fersen and his wife Katarina Elisabet Burth.

Life

Reinhold Johan von Fersen first joined the army of Duke Jakob Kettler of Courland in 1671 and became lieutenant in the Courland Dragoons in 1672 . In 1674, during the Dutch War , he changed to Dutch services; he became a captain in a Dutch dragoon regiment and took part in the battle of Seneffe , the siege of Oudenaarde and the reconquest of Grave on October 26, 1674 under the governor William of Orange .

In 1675 he went back to Sweden and became major in the Vyborg and Savonlinna Dragons. During the Northern War (1674–1679) he took part in the campaign in Skåne on July 14, 1677 in the victorious battle of Landskrona against the Danes . In 1677 he became a lieutenant colonel in the Västerbotten infantry. In 1684 he became a colonel and commander of this regiment. From 1688 to 1692 he was also vice-governor of the province of Västerbotten. After the outbreak of the Great Northern War in 1700, he took on July 19, 1701 with his regiment under Charles XII. at the crossing over the Daugava and the following battle near Riga and on July 19, 1702 in the battle near Klissow . In 1702 he was promoted to major general of the infantry and appointed commander of Gothenburg . In 1705 he became governor ( Landshövding ) of the Halland province , in 1709 lieutenant general of the infantry and governor of Riga , and in 1710 governor of Wismar .

In 1711 Fersen was owned by King Charles XII. Appointed to the royal council and in 1712 he was raised to the status of hereditary count. After two years as General Feldzeugmeister , he was appointed President of Svea hovrätt , the first and still largest of the six appellate courts in Sweden, in 1715 . It was founded in 1614 as the first Swedish court of its kind and until the establishment of the Högsta domstolen in 1789 was the highest court instance under the king and the imperial council .

Reinhold Johan von Fersen died in Stockholm on December 10, 1716.

family

Fersen was married to Baron Anna Sophia von Ungern-Sternberg (1628–1678), who was also from the Baltic nobility, widow of Major General Jacob Stael von Holstein and daughter of the Riga castle commandant Wolmar von Ungern-Sternberg and his wife Sophia. The general and statesman Hans Reinhold von Fersen (1683–1736) was their son.
