Rens Newland (born September 18, 1953 in Amersfoort as Rens Nieuwland ) is a Dutch musician ( guitar ) who mainly works in Austria. Stylistically, he moves in the areas of jazz , fusion and funk .

Career

Newland first participated as a guitarist in various Dutch fusion bands, including Scope. Scope were on tour in Germany and produced two long-playing records there, which entered the jazz charts on the Billboard charts .

In 1977 Newland moved to Vienna and took a job with the ORF Big Band and the Erich Kleinschuster Sextet . In 1977 he initiated his first solo projects with “Electrio” and “Newland”. The ORF Big Band was dissolved in 1981 and Newland went to the group " Ostinato ", where he played as a funk and jazz guitarist on many club tours and festivals in Austria, Germany and Switzerland, wrote brass arrangements and later became deputy director Thomas Böröcz ascent. During this time Newland recorded a few long-playing records and worked with Gina Charito.

Until 1991 Newland continued his collaboration with the Austrian Broadcasting Corporation as a musician, arranger and producer , for example with the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Moonlight Orchestra .

In 1991 Newland played with the Vienna Big Band Machine . He founded the Jive Music label with Martin Fuss and Hans Salomon . From 1993 he was involved in Karl “Bumi” Fian's project “Enfant Terrible” project (with Thomas Lang , Willi Langer and initially Woody Schabata ) (CD 1995).

From 1996 Newland released his own albums, initially in 1996 "(About) Sexy Jazz", in which he played with Uli Langthaler, Joris Dudli and Herwig Gradischnig , and the following year his first album with acoustic solo guitar. Newland put together a septet called "Brassbabies & Rhythmkids", on which Werner Feldgrill, Thomas Kugi, Christian Maurer , Gerald Preinfalk , among others , contributed, which is also documented on CD .

With the vibraphonist Flip Philipp , who joined "Enfant Terrible" , he started the groove jazz project Yacuzu in 1997 , in which various solo singers such as Cedric, Peter Duke and Jacqueline Patricio were involved. In 1999 Newland mainly gave live concerts and recorded a CD for his project "Rens Newland & fonky world", which consisted of a guitar trio and two percussionists, Stephan Maaß and Moses Afanyi . Then he started Groove It and worked with Lionel Lodge.

Together with Lionel Lodge and later alone as a guest soloist, there was a close and regular collaboration with the Ukrainian group Braty Bluzu from 2001 and after a 10-year break " Ostinato " was restarted in 2004 , 2 albums and many concerts followed.

From 2008 Newland was involved in several musical and theater productions as a guitarist (High School Musical, Catch Me If You Can, Xanadu, Flashdance) and produced the music for a chorus line production. From 2010 he has been musical director and guitarist for Maya Hakvoort and her production company ( Voices of Musical , A Christmas Eve , The Best of Musical )

He also appeared with Richard Oesterreicher , Toots Thielemans , Clark Terry , Joe Zawinul , Kai Winding , Tony Lakatos , Harry Sokal , Michel Legrand and Wolfgang Puschnig , but also with Lou Rawls , Edu Lobo , Harry Belafonte , Caterina Valente and Barry Manilow . For several years he toured as musical director of Gloria Gaynor and The Supremes . He also produced albums by Gina Charito, Willi Langer and Reuben Silverbird .
