The Resorts World Arena is a multi-purpose hall in the English city of Birmingham , UK . Concerts are mainly held in the hall . The venue is eight miles from the city center but is conveniently located near the M42 motorway , Birmingham Airport and Birmingham International Train Station.

history

The Resorts World Arena is part of the convention center, the National Exhibition Center (NEC) and was identified as 1980 NEC Arena officially opened. The owner is the NEC Group, which u. a. also owns the NEC, the Barclaycard Arena and the International Convention Center . At the time of inauguration, the NEC Arena was the largest event hall in the kingdom. Today, with 15,685 seats, after the Manchester Arena (21,000 seats), the O₂ Arena in London (20,000 seats) and the Barclaycard Arena (15,800 seats), it is the fourth largest event arena in the island state .

After over 40 years which changed Horse Show Horse of the Year Show 2002 by the London Wembley Arena in the NEC Arena. Between 2008 and 2009 the concert arena was modernized for £ 29 million . With the renovation, the South Korean company took over LG Electronics , the naming rights at the NEC Arena. In November 2014, the NEC Group announced the name change for the arena. The new name sponsor is the Malaysian Genting Group . The renaming took place in January 2015.

On December 19, 2010, the election of the BBC Sports Personality of the Year took place in the LG Arena . The clear winner the year before the BBC organized public vote was Northern Irish jockey Tony McCoy with 293,152 votes (41.98%) in front of the English darts player Phil Taylor with 72,095 votes (10.33%) and the British heptathlete Jessica Ennis with 62,953 (9 , 02%). On December 18, 2016, the athletes' election took place in the hall for a second time. It was won for the third time by the Scottish tennis player Andy Murray with 247,419 votes (33.1%) ahead of the English triathlete Alistair Brownlee with 121,665 votes (16.3%) and the English show jumper Nick Skelton with 109,197 votes (14.6%).

Over the years, many national and international artists and bands have performed in the concert arena. Furthermore find u. a. and family shows such as Disney on Ice, the Cirque du Soleil , The X Factor Live Tour , WWE Smackdown , freestyle motocross or stand-up comedy performances by Ricky Gervais , Al Murray , Michael McIntyre and Peter Kay will be held.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games were awarded to Birmingham in December 2017. The Genting Arena is intended as the venue for badminton competitions .

At the end of September 2018, the NEC Group announced that the Genting Arena will be renamed “Resorts World Arena” from December 3rd of that year. Genting UK has remained a sponsor of the hall. The reason for the new name is the recreation and entertainment center “Resorts World Birmingham”, which opened three years ago, opposite the arena. It is intended to show that the two institutions are more united.

The hall is to be expanded for the 2022 Commonwealth Games. With around 6000 additional seats (to 21,600), the arena in Birmingham would be the largest in the country. In addition to the Resorts World Arena, there is also the Birmingham Arena , which is roughly the same size , and both are operated by the NEC Group. There should be a draft for the expansion of Populous . Plans for the £ 45 million work were previously submitted to Solihull Council . The hall would be partially demolished for the renovation. The number of seats would be increased by 38 percent. The new roof will raise the Resorts World Arena ten meters (32.8 feet ) in height. Badminton, boxing , judo , table tennis , weightlifting , para-powerlifting and wrestling will all take place during the Commonwealth Games .
