Coat of arms of those von Restorff

Restorff , also Retzdorff, Redekestorf , is the name of an old north German noble family . The Lords of Restorff belong to the Mecklenburg prehistoric nobility and also gained possession and prestige in the Mark Brandenburg and the Kingdom of Denmark . Branches of the family still exist today.

There is no evidence of a tribal relationship to the gender of those from the Knesebeck with the same coat of arms .

history

origin

The family was first mentioned in 1226 with Albertus de Redekisdorp . He was named in a document as a witness to the Margraves Johann and Otto von Brandenburg . In 1249, Johannes de Redesketorp was mentioned as a witness to a land grant to the Church of Parchim by Prince Pribislaw I and Johannes de Redekesdorp first appeared in Mecklenburg. In 1254 the same person was, this time Johann Redekestörp written by Archbishop Albrecht of Riga with the village Slöten at Parchim besides the while lying mill invested .

The family seat was probably Restorf near Gartow on the Elbe . The village of Restorff was enfeoffed in 1300 with the villages of Wessentin, Brook, Kritzow, Kratel and Petrol "with all the justice that your ancestors had" to two Restorff brothers by Prince Nicholas II . The identity of the gender with the village in this document indicates that the family originated from this village Restorff.

Expansion and possessions

In his chronicle (written around 1510) of the state of Mecklenburg , Bernhard Latomus reports that the family was resident in Brandenburg under Heinrich I from Saxony in 927 and then came to Mecklenburg under the princes of Werle , which cannot be proven from today's sources.

Several tribes appeared early on in Mecklenburg, the Prignitz and Jerichower Land , the genealogical connection of which has not yet been clarified beyond doubt. This is what the Mecklenburg family called Restorff, the other tribes Retzdorff. The Jerichow tribe already died out around 1655, the Prignitzer tribe in 1857. The progenitor of all of the v. Restorff is cord, which was called in the period 1391 to 1415 in Radepohl and Wessin in Mecklenburg. The individual trunks and branches are derived from it.

In 1523 members of the family were among the signatories of the Union of Estates . Already in 1396 Gumprecht and Brüning Redeckestorp sat on Bolz, before 1444 on Mustin, in 1466 Hans von Restorff was called, in 1487 Cord von Restorff in Radepohl, 1586 Curt von Restorff in Wessin and 1602 in Cummin. Until their Kuppentiner line died out in 1504, the von Restorff's sat in Kuppentin and were again owned by Kuppentin at the end of the 16th century until 1732 and in Weisin in 1733 . At the end of the 16th century, Nutteln, Pentzlin, Reppentin, Rütenbeck, Schloen, Schönfeld, Varchow and Wieschendorf belonged to the family or part of it. In more recent times, members of Werle (1806), Rakow (1810), Rosenhagen (1833) and Radegast (1837) were wealthy. In Einschreibebuch of Dobbertin Abbey there are 20 entries of daughters of the family of Restorff 1710-1907 from mustine, Bolz, Rosehagen and Werle for inclusion in the noble Damenstift in Kloster Dobbertin .

Numerous Restorffs served in the Prussian army during the 19th century . Ludwig von Restorff died in 1826 as commandant of the Ehrenbreitstein Fortress . Friedrich von Restorff († 1848), royal Prussian colonel in the war ministry, was an important writer who wrote several geographical works, including on the Rhine province and Pomerania . The Restorff effect that she first described was named after the German psychologist Hedwig von Restorff (* 1906; † 1962) .

Branches of the family came to Denmark from Mecklenburg under the reign of King Christian V. On May 22, 1776, Adolf Friedrich von Restorff received from the Möderitz house, royal Danish captain , the Danish nobility naturalization . What is striking about this noble family is that the male representatives were predominantly in military service and continue this tradition in the Bundeswehr even today.

The family association , which still exists today, was founded in 1894 . Since 2004 the association has been running a website with a focus on genealogy and family history.
