The Rock River is a 459 km long tributary of the Mississippi River in the US -amerikanischen states Wisconsin and Illinois . Of this, 262.3 kilometers flow through Illinois.
It rises in southeastern Wisconsin, in the southwestern part of Fond du Lac County , about 16 km south of Ripon and 40 km southwest of Lake Winnebago . It flows south through the Horicon Marsh and then meanders through the area between the Wisconsin River and Lake Michigan . He passes Watertown , Jefferson . The Bark River flows into Fort Atkinson , and in northern Rock County the Yahara River flows into the Rock River. The river then flows south via Janesville and Beloit in northern Illinois, where the Pecatonica River joins 8 km south of the state line.
The Rock River continues south through Rockford and continues southwest past Oregon , Dixon, and Rock Falls , from where the river is navigable. The confluence with the Mississippi River is at Rock Island .
