Rockau is a district of the city of Schkölen in the Saale-Holzland district in Thuringia .

Geography and geology

Rockau lies east of the slopes of the Saale on a plateau and protrudes into the area around Tautenburg . With a local road to the L1070 leading from Camburg to Eisenberg , the district is connected to the public transport network with a connection to the federal motorway 9 . The soils in the district are made up of weathered shell limestone, which is also loosened in the better locations. Neighboring towns are south of Rauschwitz , west of Tautenburg , north of Wetzdorf and east of Poppendorf and Mertendorf .

history

Rockau was first mentioned in a document in 1253. Originally, the Tautenburg taverns were masters of the place. After this noble family died out, Rockau belonged to the Electoral Saxon Office of Tautenburg from 1640/52 . With the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Rockau became part of the Grand Duchy of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach and in 1822 was incorporated into the Bürgel and Tautenburg office. In 1850 the place came to the administrative district Weimar II (from 1868: administrative district Apolda ) of the Grand Duchy. Since 1920 the place belongs to the state of Thuringia.

Once upon a time, an estate cultivated larger areas in the district. Only a few converted parts of the building remain of the property. This property was expropriated after 1945 without compensation and handed over to poor farmers and settlers. From 1952 on, the farmers then had to take the path of collectivizing their farms. After the fall of the Wall they found new forms of collaboration.

Around 1920 there was a field airfield in Rockau that could be used as an emergency airfield by military aircraft during World War II.
