The Rosa-Luxemburg-Gymnasium (short RLG , after the location also Kissingengymnasium ) is a high school in Berlin-Pankow . It was in 1907 as a secondary school opened and was called from 1995 to September 2011, Rosa Luxembourg high school shortly RLO . In between it had different names.

history

Wilhelm Pieck School (1955)

The school was built as a secondary school in 1907 and only accepted male students in the first few decades. This represented the counterpart to today's Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium , which was a lyceum . The architecture of the building also expresses the fact that the secondary school was intended for boys. The stairwell is angular and designed without decorations. Later it was named Eosander-von-Göte -Gymnasium (called Eosander School). During the Second World War , the building was used as a hospital, which was still visible in 2016 by the large white circles on the facade of the main building.

After the war, the teaching facility opened as the Wilhelm Pieck School , named after the President of the GDR , Wilhelm Pieck . It was later called the Wilhelm Pieck Oberschule . The emphasis was placed on Russian lessons, which started from the third grade. A few years after the German reunification , the grammar school did not have a name until the school agreed on a name in a project week and dealt intensively with the new namesake: Rosa Luxemburg . Since then, the Rosa-Fahrt has taken place annually, on which 9th and 10th grade students follow in the footsteps of Rosa Luxemburg.

The school's logo and motto (see info box above) have existed since it was founded in 1907. This logo is also used on the medals that high school graduates receive when they issue certificates.

South side of the main building

From 1996 to 2011, the school participated as one of 13 educational institutions in the Berlin trial individualization of high school education ( high-speed classes , express high school diploma ), which had been expanded to become a super - high-speed school trial with the general reduction in school time in the state of Berlin . In order to reduce the immense workload and to counter the departure of entire generations of graduates at the age of 16 or 17, the school conference decided to change course in 2010. The talented students continued to attend the RLG from the 5th grade, but the 8th grade could no longer be skipped. The teaching time gained was used to promote special and broad-based talent development (in the form of enrichment courses). In addition, it has a system of hours that is unique in Berlin. The length of the hour varies between 30 and 90 minutes, with a basic length of 60 minutes. This also takes weather influences into account.

Building complex

overview

The Rosa-Luxemburg-Gymnasium complex consists of several buildings: the main building, the rector's villa, auxiliary buildings (also D-building), a new building from the beginning of the 21st century and the large gym and the cafeteria (the former gym). The building ensemble was created according to plans and under the direction of Wilhelm Johow . The main building, villa and cafeteria are under monument protection .

Instead of the bicycle racks, there was originally a large toilet block in the courtyard behind the main building, the foundation walls of which were preserved and the bicycle racks separated from the rest of the school yard. They were eliminated in 2018.

Uses and renovations

Front entrance to the main building of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Gymnasium

The main building with the front facing Kissingenstrasse 12 was the first building of the school. The adjoining south wing was added later. The annex with the toilets was also built much later, recognizable by the different architectural styles.

The south wing, in which all classrooms are located, was completely renovated by 2015. Since then, every room has had soundproofing and acoustic ceilings as well as active and whiteboard boards . In addition, fire doors with smoke detectors secure all longer corridors. The toilets were renovated in 2001.

The main building houses the secretariat, the headmaster's office , the deputy headmistress and the educational coordinators, the teachers' room, the computer rooms, the science wing redesigned in the 1990s, the music rooms and the auditorium.

The rooms adjoining the auditorium can now be used again appropriately. These include the storage room next to the entrance to the auditorium (formerly the music room), the former recording studio, which serves as a space for the performing game , and the large music room behind the auditorium.

Auditorium

Auditorium

The large auditorium of the school has always been an event space for a wide variety of school events, including Christmas and spring concerts, performances of the field of performing arts and the awards ceremony. Before 1945 it served as a prayer room and was equipped with an organ. Shortly after the end of the Second World War, soldiers of the Red Army dismantled the entire wood paneling and the organ - everything was transported to an unknown destination.

In spring 2003, construction experts discovered that various harmful wood preservatives were leaking from the space between the outer ceiling and the school roof on the chandelier suspensions. The auditorium was then stripped of these materials and completely renovated. The school association started several campaigns to support the school in managing costs. After a total of five years, the auditorium was reopened on July 9, 2007 with a concert.

Since the renovation, the auditorium has had lighting and sound technology, electrically operated window shutters, a projector and screen as well as a grand piano. The room is used by the performing game groups, school choirs, school orchestras and the school's jazz and big bands. The technical support of events is provided by the Aula-Technik AG. In addition, exams and the Abitur exams are written in the auditorium.

The first concerts in the new auditorium took place on the occasion of the 100th school anniversary. There was a soloist concert, a jazz night, performances of the two performing and game courses, ideas competitions and the ceremony on November 7, 2007. The school ball for the anniversary and the 2007 alumni meeting were also largely held in the auditorium. Since the end of 2007, all choir and orchestral concerts as well as other performing and game performances have taken place in the auditorium. In January 2008, the RLG's musical Lili Marie premiered in the auditorium.

However, the Abitur certificates are not issued in the auditorium, as it does not have enough seats. The French Friedrichstadtkirche at the French Cathedral is mostly used for this, in 2008 the Volksbühne at Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz as an exception . In addition, the certificates were awarded in 2011 and 2012 in the Postbahnhof at Ostbahnhof in order to rehearse for the 2012 double year.

Other locations were used for the various school events during the renovation phase:

Cafeteria and gyms

For a long time, the food distribution for the students was in the adjoining building. Due to the low seating capacity, this often had to be done in shifts and under great time pressure. At the same time, the school's small gym, built in 1907, was in a desolate state. Due to the financial hardship of the Pankow district, sports equipment, sanitary facilities and the roof structure of the building fell into disrepair. Sports activities were only possible to a limited extent. After years of intensive work by the school committees, the building was converted into a new cafeteria. The initial planning provided for financing by the school lunch provider Bärenmenu with a simultaneous contract. However, funds from the Federal Government's economic stimulus package made it possible for the district to carry out the reconstruction, based on the school's professional preparatory work. The renovation began in autumn 2009 and was completed in 2010. Since then, Sodexo has been supplying and managing the new canteen as the successor to BärenMENU .

For physical education the students use a still preserved but dilapidated hall, but it also takes place in the sports hall of the neighboring elementary school.

Rector's residence ( villa )

At the beginning of the 20th century it was customary to build a separate house on the property for headmasters, stokers and other helpers. After the Second World War, the building was used as a day care center for the pupils of the Wilhelm Pieck School in the afternoons. The rooms have been used for high school social science courses since the 21st century, as their small size means that they can only accommodate courses with a small number of students.

Outbuilding 1

The outbuilding (prefabricated building) behind the school was built as a primary school during the GDR era. After the German reunification and the adaptation of the school system, it belonged to the Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule. To reach it from the main building, the students had to cross Borkumstrasse. The rooms served as classrooms for the language area of the upper secondary level and as music and art rooms. Furthermore, it was home to the completion of the new dining hall to the school dining hall and several rooms for jazz bands, school bands and the AG studio technology. The lack of insulation in the prefabricated building caused climatic problems in both summer and winter. The Pankow district was unable to provide any money for the urgently needed renovation. After some cosmetic repairs, such as closing holes in the floors and removing crumbling wall and ceiling coverings, the upper two floors of the building had to be closed in 2012. For the 2013/2014 school year, classes were suspended due to the risk of the building collapsing; in 2015 this outbuilding was completely demolished.

D building

Due to a lack of classrooms, a building made of red containers with a ground floor and two floors was built, in which mainly classes eight to twelve are taught.

particularities

Promotion of the gifted

The RLG is one of seven Berlin high schools that offer a broad, general promotion of talented students , in which students do not have to commit themselves to a subject in advance. Part of this promotion of talented students are the fast-learning system (see educational pathways ), the wide range of musical ensembles and participation in competitions such as Jugend debattiert and Jugend forscht , supervised by teachers .

Lesson system and learning materials

The grammar school was the only school in Berlin to introduce a new hourly system in the 2006/2007 school year.

Since the freedom to use teaching materials was abolished in Berlin in 2003 , students have had to purchase their books themselves. However, the school management of the RLG uses the more cost-effective solution for all pupils: the teaching material fund , which is now available in many schools. According to this, every student pays a certain amount (60  ) per school year into the teaching material fund. The school books can be used for this as before. That is, the school continues to lend its textbooks to students without them having to buy them. The advantages are that everything remains almost as it was before, the school doesn't just have to put away its books and let them collect dust and, above all, many more new books and CD-ROMs can be bought for the students, which has a positive effect on the students.

student

Around 900 pupils are currently studying at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule. They come not only from Alt-Pankow, but also from other parts of Berlin and the surrounding area ( Panketal , Bernau ). The extended catchment area is due to the special features of the school, especially the (super) high-speed classes, which is why the Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule is very popular and enjoys a good reputation throughout Berlin.

Educational pathways

The Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule offers two routes to the Abitur:

From the 5th grade

From the 5th grade onwards, the RLG offers fast-learning classes in which the intended subject matter is dealt with in a shorter time up to the 8th grade and the space created is used for special enrichment courses that the students can choose themselves. Before the 2010/2011 class, the resulting time was not filled with further courses, but the students skipped the 8th grade. This system was called the super-fast runner classes and enabled the participants to achieve the general technical college entrance qualification in 11 years.

Selection process, language teaching

The selection process, in which the most suitable students were found from the 200 applicants for 60 places, was divided into three stages at the secondary school . First, interested parties or their parents applied with their primary school certificate from the first half of the 4th grade and a recommendation for a high school. Then the applicant was invited to a central (IQ) test if the primary school certificate and recommendation were not entirely against admission to the grammar school from the 5th grade. The best 80 students in the test were invited to the admissions interview in two groups of 40 each, 60 were shortlisted. The admission interview took place in groups of 5–6 students each. The headmaster and the future class teachers were present. In this conversation, the teamwork and motivation of the students was observed and tested in small tasks. If the admission interview was passed successfully, there was a written confirmation that the applicant could enter the Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule from the next school year.

In principle, the selection of students continues to follow this procedure.

The educational path is two-course, one class has English as the first foreign language and Latin as the second foreign language; the second class first learns English and Spanish as a second foreign language. The educational path from the 7th grade is completely normal according to the new Berlin standard with 12 school years. A class with 32 students will be set up, half of whom will study Spanish and Latin as a second foreign language from the 7th grade onwards.

subjects

Overview

In addition to the usual subjects of German, English, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology, geography, history / social studies (in SEK I), political science (from SEK II, formerly political world studies), sport, art and music, the RLG offers other subjects :

In lower secondary level

  • From the 9th grade: ethics is replaced by philosophy and taught weekly for 60 or 120 minutes. - as a school experiment at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule. In addition, it is now possible to take the DS subject, which is graded, as is the case with secondary level II.

In upper secondary level

Religion (voluntary), Spanish, Latin, Russian, French, philosophy, psychology, additional history course, performing games, additional music course (for members of large choirs, orchestras, jazz bands and big bands), computer science, additional German course in scientific work , Additional physics course, sports theory

High School

The Abitur basically consists of different grades from the four semesters (half-years) of the Abitur phase in classes 12 and 13, or 11 and 12 after the educational reform, and of course the exams. The student must choose two advanced courses, each of which has to be completed three hours of 75 minutes a week. In addition, 25 basic courses are to be chosen over the four semesters, in which 2 hours of 75 and 60 minutes each take place. The subjects that were deselected in Class 11, 12 or 13 may not be chosen as an examination subject. Otherwise, the Abitur is based on Berlin standards. There are small restrictions on advanced courses at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Gymnasium: geography, psychology, computer science and sport cannot be taken as advanced courses. However, there are also small peculiarities here: Russian, Latin, philosophy and music as advanced courses are unusual in Berlin, but are offered at the RLG.

The evening after the certificate is awarded, the Abitur ball traditionally takes place, where all high school graduates celebrate their farewell to school life together with their parents and teachers.

Events

Spring, summer and Christmas festivals

Every year two concerts are held in spring and three in the run-up to Christmas by the two choirs and the orchestra of the Rosa-Luxemburg-Gymnasium. The auditorium or the alternative quarters mentioned above, such as the French Friedrichstadt Church at the French Cathedral , the Hope Church in Elsa-Brändström-Straße or the Jewish orphanage Pankow served as event locations . These concerts are regularly sold out and tickets are sold out in just a few minutes. Listeners are mostly parents and students of the school, teachers, private persons and former students of the school. A Christmas market takes place at the end of the Christmas concerts.

CD productions

Cover of the anniversary CD

There are now a number of CD productions by choirs and orchestras of the RLG. The first CD was released in 1997 for the school's 90th birthday, on which not only a small choir, a large choir and orchestra but also some school bands could record titles. The next production appeared in 2000, also by choirs and orchestras.

For 2007, the 100th anniversary of the school, there was, as can be seen in the picture, another CD with recordings and recordings of choirs, orchestras as well as jazz combo and big band.

Honorary award

Every year on March 5th, the birthday of Rosa Luxemburg , the honorary prizes of the Rosa Luxemburg Oberschule are awarded. With these prizes in different, changing, categories, students, study groups or other student groups are honored for special services to the school. The prizes are sponsored by members of the Berlin House of Representatives and private individuals. The solemn event, which is accompanied by music from students, actually takes place in the auditorium. With the closure of this, this event was moved to the prayer room of the Jewish orphanage in Pankow. Since only a few people fit in there, there is a concert by school bands for the schoolchildren who cannot go there.

Since 2008, the award ceremony has been taking place in the auditorium as before.

Abitur certificate award

The Abitur certificate, which usually takes place on the Saturday after the oral exams, has taken place in the French Friedrichstadtkirche on Gendarmenmarkt in recent years. The certificates are given individually by the respective tutors and the students are called. The order of the tutor groups is determined by a random generator. There are speeches from high school graduates, the school principal and a high school speech from a teacher chosen by the students. The event is accompanied by the orchestra and the large choir; high school graduates enter the church during the orchestra's opening piece. The musical groups often highlight the high school graduates from their ranks.

Despite the reopening of the auditorium, the awarding of certificates will continue to take place at Gendarmenmarkt due to the higher capacity.

The Abitur was only awarded in 2011 and 2012 in the Postbahnhof at Ostbahnhof, as significantly more high school graduates had to be honored with the 2012 double year.

Auschwitz memorial tour

For 11th grade students, there is a memorial tour to Krakow and Auschwitz every November . The former concentration camps Auschwitz and Birkenau are visited together with students from the Friedrich-Engels-Gymnasium and the history is dealt with intensively. This trip is very stimulating for students and teachers and offers the opportunity to get an idea of German history for yourself.

Working groups

overview

The Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule offers working groups in many directions for the afternoons, such as youth research , an orchestra, two choirs, studio technology, basketball, volleyball, jazz bands, a grindcore workshop, a locker company and many others. Social, scientific or cultural commitment is repeatedly awarded with honorary prizes from the Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule.

Choirs, symphony orchestras and jazz bands

The RLG offers students a wide range of opportunities to try out music. There are also two choirs, a symphony orchestra, a youth orchestra and a jazz big band. In addition, students can also take part in the studio technology and / or Aulatechnik working group, which takes care of recording the bands and music events and the lighting.

Students who play an orchestral instrument can play in one of the school orchestras. The orchestra is open to students of all ages and almost all instruments. In addition to the "normal" instruments (strings, wood and brass), there is also a need for percussion, drum set, piano and electric bass. The orchestra's repertoire consists of film music, classical, romantic, and pop and jazz arrangements.

For those interested in playing with musical instruments who have not yet started, there is the possibility of learning from professional instrumental teachers in group or individual lessons, inexpensive, without a waiting list and soon after the end of the lesson, in order to join the orchestra or the big band later.

For the younger singers (grades 5–8) there is the middle school choir ( small choir ). There, the first pieces are rehearsed and performed at the Christmas and spring concerts. For the older students (grades 9-12) there is the four-part high school choir ( large choir ).

In the 2006/2007 school year the big band Brassnos was founded at the RLG . She also performs outside of school concerts, including in the Schlot art factory . Members of the big band are not only students from the RLG, but also from other Berlin high schools.

The studio technology group was re-founded in the 2004/05 school year. It is run by a sound engineer together with AG-Aulatechnik. The studio technology group concentrates on recording concerts and setting up a studio itself. She also accompanies the ensembles with sound and lighting.

Special musical events are also the annual performances of the supplementary music course, the members of which dine from all ensemble participants in the upper level.

School newspaper

The school newspaper Schlagader , which has existed for several years, is run as a working group and publishes a print edition at most every three months. It contains news from the school, articles about events, and fancy teacher quotes.

Since the beginning of 2011, the Rosa-Luxemburg-Gymnasium has had the digital school newspaper Kissingenstraße 12 in addition to the artery . At least three articles from a wide variety of topics are published weekly. The editorial team includes students from all grades.

Student Council

The general student council (GSV) of the RLG constitutes itself about once a month to discuss and decide on current issues. She was involved in the planning of the school parties (especially the high school party) as part of the school anniversary. The GSV has reorganized itself since its trip around December 2007. Specific projects are tackled in various working groups.

The GSV deals with an online substitution plan, the school ball together with the Carl-von-Ossietzky-Gymnasium, the beautification of the school yard, a project week and many other interesting projects. It also has a website that provides information about the work, documents relevant to pupils and meeting minutes can be downloaded, members can specifically write to and information on events. Furthermore, the general student council is politically active, works a lot with the organization “more than learning”, and has concentrated on representing the students' opinions as well as possible. The GSV is now an active school policy body and has set itself the goal of creating more transparent interaction between school and students.

King Code Project

In cooperation with the Ernst Reuter secondary school, students of the RLG researched the traces of Martin Luther King's visit to Berlin and presented them under the name King Code . King visited Berlin in September 1964. The project was sponsored by Peter Kloeppel and Wolfgang Thierse . Federal President Joachim Gauck described the student activities as a “good initiative to convey the impact and significance of human rights clearly and sustainably”.

Partner schools

The Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule maintains contacts with several partner schools in Kołobrzeg (Poland), Portugal, Mexico, France, Sweden and Spain.

School inspection

The Senate Department for Education, Youth and Sport has been carrying out school inspections since the 2005/2006 school year. The first schools were drawn or volunteered, all others are to be inspected in the coming years. The Rosa-Luxemburg-Oberschule was visited several times in 2006 by the inspectors and after interviews with the headmaster, teachers, parents and students, class visits and other checks, the school was assessed. This turned out to be very positive for the RLG, especially when it comes to the quality of the teaching. It was criticized, however, that new media (such as the use of laptops and DVDs), although available, are not used as often as they could be used. The report is available as a PDF file on the school's website; there is a link at the end of this article.
