Rosh HaAyin ( Hebrew ראש העין, Arabic روش هاعين, dt. "origin, source") is a city in Israel . The city had 56,344 inhabitants in 2018.
General information
Rosh HaAyin was founded in 1949 and received city status in 1994. The city has an area of 24 km² and is located on the border between the Shomron , the Sharon Plains and the Shefela in central Israel. It is 25 km away from Tel Aviv and borders on Petach Tikwa . Northeast of Rosh HaAjin is the “Afeq Industrial Park” with companies in the software and telecommunications industry .
Every Friday there is a large flea market in Rosh HaAyin , which attracts many visitors. Several archaeological sites can be found in Rosh HaAyin ; The ruins of the city of Antipatris, built by Herod the Great, and the crusader castle of Mirabel to the southeast are particularly significant .
Population structure
The Rosh HaAyin population is divided into two parts. The inhabitants of the "Old City" in the west are mostly of Yemeni origin; they are the original inhabitants of the city. The population of these districts is older and economically weaker. This part of the population is also predominantly religious ; Signs at the driveways ask drivers not to drive on the Sabbath (although the streets are not closed on the Sabbath, such as in Bnei Berak ). The city arms also contain biblical words: “I (God) carried you on eagle wings.” ( Ex 19.4 EU ) These words also refer to the flight operation “ Flying Carpet ”, through which most of the Yemenis in 1949/50 Immigrants came.
In the 1990s, new neighborhoods were built on the hills to the east. Many of those who live there are immigrants from the former Soviet Union and Tzabarim who have moved there . The residents of the newer parts of the city are more secular and educated. There is hardly any contact between the two parts of the population.
