Wilhelm August Rudolf Lehmann (born August 19, 1819 in Ottensen near Altona, † October 27, 1905 in Bournemede, Bushey (Hertfordshire) , England) was a German - English painter .

Life

Lehmann was the son of Leo Lehmann ; the painter Henri Lehmann was his older brother. At the age of 16 Lehmann went to Paris in 1835 and was there for two years a student at the École des Beaux-Arts ; u. a. with his brother Heinrich (Henri). At the end of 1837 Lehmann returned to Germany and settled in Munich .

There he became a student in the studios of Peter von Cornelius and Wilhelm von Kaulbach between spring 1838 and autumn 1839 . Supported by his teachers, Lehmann went on a study trip to Rome in November 1839 , from which he returned in November 1846. Rudolf Lehmann was a member of the Hamburg Artists' Association from 1832 .

In 1850 Lehmann went to London and settled there as a freelance painter. As early as 1851 he was invited to take part in the major annual exhibitions of the Royal Academy of Arts . Between 1855 and 1859 Lehmann stayed in Rome again to study antiquity.

Lehmann's third trip to Rome took place between 1863 and 1864. A major focus in Lehmann's artistic work were his descriptions of daily life in and around Rome. Lehmann was also a sought-after artist as a portraitist ; the writers Robert Browning , Ferdinand Gregorovius and Alphonse de Lamartine , the painters Peter von Cornelius and Adolph Menzel , the politicians William Ewart Gladstone and Frederick Lygon, 6th Earl Beauchamp , the scientists Alexander von Humboldt and Leopold von Ranke , the musicians Frédéric Chopin , Franz Liszt , Giacomo Meyerbeer a . v. a. sat for him as a model.

In 1895 Lehmann published his memoir An artist's reminiscences in London . In 1904 Lehmann took part in an exhibition at the Royal Academy for the last time. He died the following year at the age of 86 on October 27 in Bournemede, Bushey.
