Rudolf Magnitzke

Rudolf Magnitzke (born September 12, 1927 in Torgau ; † October 1, 2018 ) was major general of the National People's Army (NVA) of the German Democratic Republic .

Life

After twelve years of schooling in basic subjects, the son of a tailor began an apprenticeship as a bricklayer in 1944, which he had to interrupt in the same year because he was called up for the Reich Labor Service and the Wehrmacht . After the Second World War and his use as a gunner in a self-propelled howitzer unit , he continued his mason training in 1945 until 1948 and joined the SED in 1947 .

On April 1, 1948, he joined the German People's Police as a constable , where he rose from group leader of the People's Police Readiness Hall and platoon leader of the 1st VP-Readiness of Saxony to company commander at the People's Police School in Naumburg (Saale) by 1950 . After a year as head of the training command at the VP Prora office , he worked for a year as a main subject teacher at the Weimar Police School . After graduating from a special course in the USSR from 1952 to 1953 , he was a subject teacher for tactics and main subject teacher for information at the college for officers until 1958 . After a brief activity as a senior reconnaissance officer in the command of Military District III in Leipzig , he was head of the operational subdivision of the 4th motorized rifle division (4th MSD) in Erfurt from 1959 to 1960 . He was then from 1960 to 1962 commander of the Motorized Rifle Regiment 22 and then until 1965 listener of the General Staff Academy of the USSR , which he graduated with the academic degree of a diploma in military science.

After his return from the USSR he was 1st Deputy Commander of the 11th Motorized Rifle Division from 1965 to 1972 and then from September 1, 1972 to October 31, 1974 as the successor to Heinz Handke in the rank of Colonel of its commander. As such, he was appointed major general on March 1, 1974, the 18th anniversary of the NVA . In 1974 he was appointed Chief of Training and Deputy Chief of Military District III. In 1976 he was appointed Deputy Head of the Inspection Administration in the Ministry of National Defense (MfNV), where he was responsible for policy issues, planning and coordination until 1980. From 1980 until his release on January 31, 1990, he was Deputy Chief of the Main Staff for general questions in the MfNV.

In the course of his military career he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit in bronze (1979) and silver (1987) and the gold medal for the battle for "For Merit to People and Fatherland" .

Magnitzke last lived in Strausberg and died at the age of 91.
