Rudolf Mazzola

Rudolf Mazzola (born April 22, 1941 in Basel , † May 18, 2010 in Vienna ) was a Swiss opera singer and Austrian chamber singer with a bass voice .

Artistic career

Mazzola studied singing at the Basel Conservatory . As a scholarship holder, he continued his vocal studies at the International Opera Studio in Zurich . He had his first engagement from 1969 to 1971 at the Stadttheater St. Gallen , where his first stage role sang the Commander in Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's opera Don Giovanni . Another permanent engagement at the Stadttheater Basel followed from 1971 to 1975 . In 1975 he was engaged at the Vienna Volksoper , where in December 1975 he appeared as Osmin in the premiere of a new production of Mozart's Singspiel Die Entführung aus dem Serail ; In 1977 he was appointed to the Vienna State Opera , where he made his debut in February 1977, also in this role.

In the years that followed, he sang mainly the buffo and character subjects at the Vienna State Opera, but also took on roles from the serious bass subject. In total, he sang in almost 1,000 performances there during his membership at the Vienna State Opera. He sang 90 times the sacristan in Tosca and 82 times the Bartolo in Le nozze di Figaro . Other roles were Sarastro in Die Zauberflöte , Basilio in Der Barbier von Sevilla , the prison director Frank in Die Fledermaus and the Baron Ochs in Der Rosenkavalier . In 1995 he sang the theater director La Roche in Capriccio . In 1995 he also took part in the world premiere of the opera Gesualdo by Alfred Schnittke at the Vienna State Opera . His last appearance at the Vienna State Opera was Schigolch in Lulu in November 2002.

In 1980 he sang at the Bregenz Festival also to Osmin . In 1981 he took part in the world premiere of the opera Baal by Friedrich Cerha at the Salzburg Festival .

Guest performances have also taken Mazzola to the Frankfurt Opera (1983 as Osmin ), the Grand Opéra Paris (1983 as Truffaldin in Ariadne auf Naxos ), the Hamburg State Opera , the Bavarian State Opera , and the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona (1984 as Doctor in Wozzeck ), to the Opéra Royal de Wallonie in Liège (1988 as Basilio ), to the National Opera in Budapest , to the Teatro Regio in Turin , to the Zurich Opera House , to the Toronto Opera House (1992 as Don Alfonso in Così fan tutte ) and in 1995 to Athens ( doctorate in Wozzeck ).

In 1988 Rudolf Mazzola was awarded the title of Kammersänger in recognition of his artistic merits and for his work at the Vienna State Opera .
