Rudolf Rentschler (born September 1940 in Nagold ) is a German mathematician and politician ( FDP ). In his scientific work he mainly concentrated on Lie algebras and their representation theory . Since 1992 he has been the party's federal auditor.

Life

Origin, education, professional and private life

He was born to Hugo and Eva Rentschler, who married in August 1938. His father ran the family's wool spinning mill . The parents' marriage in 1948 divorced . Rentschler attended high school in his hometown and then studied mathematics and economics . He completed his studies, during which he spent almost a year in the United States , in both subjects with a diploma . He was then on 22 February 1967 with the thesis about the interchangeability of the Hom-functor with direct sums at Friedrich Kasch and Max Koecher at the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich doctorate .

Rentschler was also employed there as a mathematician before he later moved to the Paris University of Pierre and Marie Curie . In 1997 he was the project leader of a CORDIS- supported research group dealing with orbits , crystals and representation theory. Over the years, in cooperation with the University of Paris VII and the Center national de la recherche scientifique , he has distinguished himself as (co-) initiator of numerous seminars and academic events. In May 2000, for example, he was responsible for the conference on “Orbits, Crystals and Representation Theory”, which was financed with third-party funding from the European TMR (Training and Mobility for Researchers) network. Another constant is his frequent organization of the "Journées Solstice d'été" - an annual scientific conference in the days around the summer solstice - in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2007. Rentschler specifically used the Lie theory and the group theory as the focus for academic discussions.

His father died in 2006 at the age of 101. Rudolf Rentschler is single and limited partner of the wool spinning mill Louis Rentschler Vermögensverwaltung KG , which now manages the shed roof buildings of the former Nagold wool spinning mill.

Political career

In addition, he has been a member of the board of the FDP Northern Black Forest district association since 1982 - temporarily as deputy chairman.

From 1982 to November 2, 2013 Rentschler held the office of state auditor within his regional association. The annual report of the FDP Baden-Württemberg for the period from July 1, 2006 to June 30, 2008 also identified him as a member of the state committee for foreign, peace and security policy and as deputy chairman of the state committee for European policy. On November 2, 2013 he was elected to the board of the regional association in the second ballot at the 110th state party conference in Filderstadt with 40.95 percent of the votes cast. Rentschler was an assessor in Department II until 2017; since then he has been a co-opted member .

In terms of federal politics , Rentschler drew attention to himself when he ran in vain against Otto Graf Lambsdorff on November 6, 1982 at the 33rd federal party conference in Berlin for the post of assessor in the party presidium. In 1992, the delegates elected him the 43rd Federal Congress in Bremen opposed a proposal of the federal leadership to federal auditors . Rentschler has held this office since (as of September 2019). On May 15, 2015, he ran against Holger Zastrow at the 66th Federal Party Congress - again as an assessor in the Presidium. However, he received only 98 votes out of 572.

Rudolf Rentschler is also active in European politics outside the state level and, for example, ran twice for the European Parliament . On 26 March 1976 he belonged in Stuttgart of the founding members of the Federation of Liberal and Democratic Parties in the European Community (now the European Party ALDE ) and regularly since 1978 as a delegate or substitute delegate of the FDP at their annual congresses. Since May 2008 he has been a delegate of the FDP state association Baden-Württemberg in the council of the ALDE. In addition, Rentschler has been honorary secretary of the Liberal Group in the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly since 1994 .

Trivia

Rentschler has often been compared to the cartoon character “Willi” from Maya the Bee because of his nasal voice - especially in the satirical programs TV total ( Pro7 ) and heute-show ( ZDF ) ; in this way he is known to a wider audience and has even been called a "cult figure".
