Rudolf von Bünau (born August 19, 1890 in Stuttgart , † January 14, 1962 in Kirchheim unter Teck ) was a German officer , most recently a general of the infantry in World War II .

Life

Bünau occurred on 15 July 1909 as an ensign in the Grenadier Regiment "Queen Olga" (1 Württembergisches) no. 119 of the Württemberg army one. From February to October 1910 he graduated from the Hanover War School and was then promoted to lieutenant on November 16, 1910 . With the mobilization at the outbreak of World War Bünau came as the leader of an MG - train in the field and first in the Argonne used. On September 7, 1914, he took over the regiment's MG company as a leader and proved so successful that on December 15, 1914, he was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Württemberg Military Merit Order for his services .

At the beginning of October 1917 he was commanded as deputy adjutant to the staff of the 407th Infantry Brigade and transferred to Bünau two months later. In this capacity he was promoted to captain on March 22, 1918 .

After the end of the war, Bünau was appointed General Command of the XIII on December 21, 1918 . (Royal Wuerttemberg) Army Corps in command. On February 21, 1919, he was assigned to the Württemberg War Ministry . Bünau was then taken over into the provisional Reichswehr . Here he acted as a machine gun officer with the staff and commander of the headquarters of the Reichswehr Brigade 13. From October 1 to December 31, 1920 he was employed as a machine gun officer with the staff of the Reichswehr Rifle Regiment 25. Then Bünau was the same Function in the 13th (Württemberg) Infantry Regiment .

In World War II he was from November 1941 to early February 1943 commander of the 73rd Infantry Division on the southern sector of the Eastern Front . From March 1944 to March 1945 he was commanding general of the XI. Army Corps in Galicia and the Carpathian Mountains . In April 1945 he was appointed combat commander of Vienna during the Battle of Vienna .

His son of the same name Rudolf von Bünau (1915–1943) was also an officer and knight's cross bearer. He was a major and commander in a reconnaissance division of the 9th Panzer Division .

According to documents published by the Federal Intelligence Service in 2014, Bünau was head of a unit of the secret Schnez troop in Stuttgart.
