The historic Halberg circular route is a circular and themed route in Saarbrücken . Historical sites from different epochs can be found on this path over the Halberg .

background

As early as the 1st century, traders and craftsmen settled at the foot of the Halberg. The Mithras grotto on the western slope of the mountain dates from the second half of the 3rd century.

Legend has it that Bishop Arnual founded a hermitage on the site of the Mithraum in the seventh century. However, traces only indicate a hermitage from the 15th century. But so far no evidence has been found in documents for this either.

Around 1610 the Obere Brebacher Mühle was located at the foot of the mountain , which was operated by Johannes Daumborn at the time.

1709–1711 Ludwig Kraft had Monplaisir Castle built on Halberg , which was destroyed in 1793 by troops from the French Revolution .

At the beginning of the industrial revolution , the Halbergerhütte was built by Wilhelm Heinrich . In the course of this, the Obere Brebacher Mill was also rebuilt. The hut was later acquired by the Stumm brothers. The latter had today's Halberg Castle built as a mansion .

The only completely preserved bunker of the West Wall in Germany can be found here from the time of the Third Reich . It includes the Regelbau 108 , which was built in 1939 at the foot of the mountain.

As early as 1939, what was then the Reichsrundfunkgesellschaft acquired a site on Halberg. In August 1959, the Saarländischer Rundfunk began building what is now the Funkhaus complex, which they moved into in 1961. This happened after the space in the old position, the so-called Wartburg in Saarbrücken, was no longer sufficient. Nowadays, the lock is also part of the transmitter's system.

In 2017, on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of broadcasting, the hiking trail over Halberg was renewed and provided with 19 steles. The renewed hiking trail was opened in May of the same year by the director of the broadcasting company Thomas Kleist and the director of the Saar Historical Museum, Simon Matzerath. Some of the sites on the trail are listed buildings. With the Mithras grotto, this hiking trail also has an intersection with the Camino de Santiago there .

description

The hiking trail starts at the Halberg-Plateau parking lot and from there turns onto a forest path. This path leads past a former vineyard . The vineyard was laid out by Friedrich Koellner on behalf of Wilhelm Heinrich . Adolph Knigge commented on local viticulture in a letter dated May 6, 1792. He wrote that the vineyard was more used to hold a festival in autumn than to actually produce wine. It was given up before 1814 because of poor yields.

The Mithras grotto on Halberg

The next waypoint is a viewpoint over the Saar valley. In this Saar valley there are the Saar Altarm and the remains of a Roman fort . There was also a Roman bridge in the valley. This bridge is said to have been destroyed at the end of the 12th century.

The trail then leads past a listed Mithras sanctuary , which was created in a natural cave on the mountain. When Monplaisir Castle was expanded, this grotto was rediscovered and integrated into the park.

Shortly afterwards on the hiking trail you will find a sandstone block with a memorial to the Good Mottel , after which the stone is also named. The stone is probably reminiscent of an 18-year-old, named model Marx Cahen, who died below the current position of the stone.

Front of the
WH 316 bunker

Arrived at the foot of the Halberg, the hiking trail passes Stummstrasse, but does not turn onto it yet. The Brebacher Friedhof and also the Halbergerhütte , where pig iron was made from iron ore until the 1990s , was located here. The standard building 108 b can also be found here (also bunker WH 316 ). It is one of 18 bunkers along the Halberg. It was restored by the Studienkreis Interfest eV and is now maintained by the Bunker WH 316 eV support group .

View of the Stumm Church and the gatehouse

Next is the so-called Schankenbrunnen on the hiking route. The three associated water cascades were probably created by Carl Ferdinand Stumm in the 19th century. Then you pass the listed gatehouse of the Halbergerhütte and the Stumm Church , which also comes from Carl Ferdinand Stumm.

After a short distance, the hiking trail passes the former site of the Halbergweiher and the old works, which were on opposite sides of the valley, below the path. In front of the old factory, which was built by Wilhelm Heinrich, was the Obere Brebacher Mill . The pond was a part of the Rohrbach that was dammed. He provided hydropower for the hammers and bellows of the plant. The pond was also used for leisure activities such as swimming and boating. In 1953 it was drained. From the old factory only the sleeping house is left, which was built in 1913 by Rudolf Böcking . Behind the work are Brebacher Alps called slag tailings piles to see.

Up the mountain again, the hiking trail passes the Hirschwiese . The clearing there was part of the zoo of the local princes. The meadow served as a grazing ground for the fallow deer kept . The area then served as a local recreation area and for folk festivals. From 1877 the site was no longer open to the public when it came into the possession of Carl Ferdinand Stumm. Heinrich Siesmayer expanded the park facilities further at this time.

The next point is the Stumm family cemetery. Today there are six graves here. In the center of the complex is an obelisk made of red syenite and most of the graves are adorned with a cast-iron grave cross. The cemetery itself is a listed building.

The bus mushroom from the stairs, behind it the gatehouse can be guessed

The Franz-Mai-road along the way comes to the remains of a water game over. The associated stork pond was filled in during a road expansion in the 1970s. After the path follows a staircase, you will find the bus mushroom , which was built in 1966/67 according to plans by the architects Alt and Kugelmann. It got the name from the employees of the station because of its shape.

Along Franz-Mai-Straße again, he leads past the economic buildings of the palace designed according to plans by Edwin Oppler . Both buildings are made of red sandstone. It is a former gardener's house and a former official residence. Access to Halberg Castle is via a gatehouse with a tower. The castle served as a mansion for Carl Ferdinand Stumm. In 1958/59 it was taken over by the Saarländischer Rundfunk. Other broadcasting buildings are located next door. The castle together with the economic buildings and the gatehouse are under monument protection.

Prince Heinrich's tomb is located on the slope of the Halberg . This is also the former location of Monplaisir Castle . Adolph von Knigge mentioned this lock in a letter. He described the castle as small and well-behaved and repeatedly emphasized the humanity of the prince. It was destroyed by French revolutionary troops in November 1793. The tomb is an obelisk.
