The Embassy of the Russian Federation Kiev is the seat of the diplomatic mission of Russia in Ukraine . The Russian Federation recognized Ukraine's independence on December 5, 1991. The Russian Embassy in Kiev opened on August 6, 1992 and is located on Powitroflotskyj Prospect ( Повітрофлотський проспект ) number 27.

Rally in front of the embassy in June 2014

On June 14, 2014, violent protests broke out in front of the embassy in response to the shooting down of a Ukrainian military plane near Luhansk . Eggs and paint were thrown at the embassy building, swastikas were smeared on the embassy gate and the embassy's Russian flag was torn from a flagpole. The Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrij Deschtschyzja had a calming effect on the demonstrators and described the Russian President with the words " Putin chuilo (Putin - dick)".

Russian ambassador to Ukraine

The first Russian ambassador to Ukraine was Leonid Yakovlevich Smolyakov, who held the post from 1991 to 1996. He was followed by Yuri Vladimirovich Dubinin from 1996 to 1999 and Ivan Pawlowitsch Aboimow from 1999 to 2001. Mikhail Yuryevich Zurabow replaced Viktor Stepanowitsch Chernomyrdin , who was ambassador from 2001, on August 5, 2009 as Russian ambassador to Ukraine.
