The eighth South Asian Football Federation Championship , officially South Asian Football Federation Cup 2009 , held from 4 to 13 December in Bangladesh. Eight teams from the South Asian region played here for the title of South Asian champion.
Although only competed with a youth team (U-23), India was able to secure the championship for the fifth time. In the final, the Indians defeated the defending champions from the Maldives 3-1 on penalties.
Bangladesh hosted the tournament for the second time after the fifth edition (2003). Back then, the host's national team won the final against the Maldives on penalties. Originally this championship was supposed to take place in India , since the Indian Football Association could not set a final date and the tournament could not be postponed to January 2010 as requested by the other associations, Nepal and Bangladesh applied again to host the final round. The tense political situation between Pakistan and India after the attacks in Mumbai also appeared to be a reason for the relocation. At the end of August 2009, Bangladesh was finally chosen as the new host.
