history

As was the case with the rail network of the central and northern Urals (see Sverdlovsk Railway ), railway construction in the Southern Urals was closely linked to the industrialization of this region in the 19th century. The first line laid in the Southern Urals was today's Trans-Siberian Railway on its section from Zlatoust to Chelyabinsk , which went into operation in 1892. Subsequently, the construction of a continuation line to western Siberia began ; the first section of this (Chelyabinsk - Kurgan ) was opened in 1893. In 1895 a connection line to the Ural Railway from Chelyabinsk to Yekaterinburg was built. At the beginning of the 20th century, the routes proved to be extremely profitable, especially in freight transport, so that extensive expansion and modernization measures were carried out on the infrastructure by 1914. During the Russian Civil War , parts of the Trans-Siberian were severely damaged, but the line also played an important role in the war transports.

After 1917, the Russian rail network became state property. The Trans-Siberian Railway was assigned to the respective regional directorates of the state railways, so that in 1934 the Southern Urals directorate was formed. During the Second World War , the Southern Urals network played an important role in the evacuation of a large number of large companies from the European part of the Soviet Union into the hinterland. In the post-war period, large parts of the route network were electrified .

Today's structure

The Southern Urals Railway has regional departments in Kurgan, Orsk, Chelyabinsk and in Petropavl, Kazakhstan . Three park railway companies in Kurgan, Orenburg and Chelyabinsk are also subordinate to the management.
