S 62 Falke (P6112) was a speedboat of the German Federal Navy . It belonged to class 143 ( Albatros class ) and was put into service on April 13, 1976 as the first boat in this class of ten boats. The boat was built at the Lürssen shipyard and after its commissioning it was subordinated to the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader , which was based in Olpenitz until the end of October 1994and then at the Warnemünde naval base . After decommissioning on December 16, 2004, the boat was launched in the naval arsenal in Wilhelmshaven , where it was used as a spare partcarrierfor the boats of the Gepard class .
predecessor
In German naval history there have been many ships and boats with the name Falke or with the designation S62. The first in this series was a sailing ship Falke of the Brandenburg Navy, which was used in the Indian Ocean from 1681 to 1696 . The Aviso SMS Falke followed at the end of the 19th century. Among other things, he took part in the Franco-German War . From 1891 to 1912 the small cruiser SMS Falke was on the move overseas for the German Empire .
During the Second World War , the torpedo boat Falke (1927–1944) and the speed boat S62 (1941–1945) were used. The torpedo boat Falke was previously in use during the Spanish Civil War and was sunk in Le Havre on June 14, 1944 by bomb hits. The last predecessor of S62 Falke was S10 Falke (P 6072) of class 141 ( Jaguar class ). This boat was in service from 1958 to 1975 like S62 in the 2nd Schnellbootgeschwader of the German Navy.
history
Construction and commissioning
On July 13, 1972, the Bremer Vulkan shipyard was commissioned to build the speedboat, and the keel was laid on October 20 of the same year. Launch and baptism followed on March 21, 1974. The Westphalian city of Coesfeld became the sponsor city . On April 13, 1976, the boat was handed over to the German Navy, as the first boat of class 143, because there had been problems with the construction of the type ship Albatros. Two weeks later, on April 26th, the boat entered the home port in Olpenitz .
Maneuvers and missions
Since the planned role of the speedboats of the Albatros class was originally the coastal defense in the North and Baltic Seas , S62 Falke took part in many maneuvers, especially in this area. Due to the new role that the Bundeswehr increasingly took on within NATO , the area of operation was also extended to the Mediterranean . S62 Falke performed its most important mission in 2002 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom (TG 500.01) in the Horn of Africa . This was the first use of the German Navy after the Second World War. The home port during the mission was the port of Djibouti . The return journey to Warnemünde took the crew through the entire Red Sea and the Mediterranean Sea as well as through the Suez Canal , the Strait of Messina and the Strait of Gibraltar . On the way, ports of call were made in eight countries, including Jeddah ( Saudi Arabia ), Safaga ( Egypt ), Málaga ( Spain ), and Souda / West Crete ( Greece ).
Decommissioning
On October 13, 2004, Falke began the last journey, the transfer journey to Wilhelmshaven , followed by decommissioning on December 16. The boat was now used as a spare part carrier for the boats of the Gepard class and has since been scrapped.
Parts of the S62 FALKE (bridge, control station, control station, horizontal tactical screen (TBH) and fore ship equipment) and S67 KONDOR (commanders' chamber) are also accessible to the public in the military-historical collection of speed boats and corvettes at the Hohe Düne naval base in Warnemünde.
