Safura (born September 20, 1992 in Baku ; full name Səfurə Əlizadə , also Safura Alizade (h) ) is an Azerbaijani singer. In 2010 she took part in the 55th Eurovision Song Contest for her home country , where she took fifth place with the title Drip Drop .

biography

Safura was born into a family of artists. Her father is a painter, her mother a pianist and fashion designer, who helped her daughter design her own costumes at an early age. Safura started singing around the age of three. She made her first public appearance three years later. In addition to a dance school and high school, she attended the music school, where she was taught to play the violin . She later taught herself to play the saxophone . She also plays the piano.

Safura soon began to pursue a career as a singer. She was a member of various children's ensembles and took part in singing competitions. She gained notoriety in her homeland through participation in the casting show Yeni Ulduz - in 2008 Safura won the Azerbaijani version of Pop Idol . At the beginning of February 2010 she took part in the Azerbaijani preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC). Together with Maryam Shabanova and the duo Milk & Kisses , she reached the final of the competition held by the national television channel İTV . She won this one at the beginning of March 2010. The English-language pop song Drip Drop , composed and written by Swedes Anders Bagge , Stefan Örn and Sandra Bjurman, was only presented as an official Azerbaijani competition entry two weeks later. Bagge had worked with Madonna and Celine Dion in the past, among others .

After winning the Azerbaijani ESC preliminary round, Safura prepared in Ukraine for the album recordings in Sweden. The filming of the music video also took place in the Ukrainian capital Kiev . Safura received support from Jaquel Knight, among others. The choreographer, who in the past worked for singers like Beyoncé Knowles and Britney Spears , was also responsible for their stage appearances at the Eurovision Song Contest. When she appeared, she wore an Italian dress creation with built-in LED lights .

At the beginning of May Safura began a promotion tour in Germany, which was to take her to the Netherlands, Switzerland, Belgium, Poland and Russia before her appearance in Oslo. The Azerbaijani singer was considered the favorite to win by international bookmakers. With Drip Drop , the 17-year-old singer was represented in the second semi-final at the 55th Eurovision Song Contest on May 27, 2010 in Oslo and reached the final two days later. There she finished fifth in the victory of the German singer Lena Meyer-Landrut . One day after the final, Safura announced that it had signed a five-year deal with an international group of Swedish and Ukrainian producers. Her debut album It's My War was released in Germany on June 17, 2010 .

As part of the preparations for their ESC appearance, a "Balkan version" of Drip Drop was created , for which the three-time ESC participant Željko Joksimović was responsible. In 2011 she read the Azerbaijani point allocation for the Eurovision Song Contest 2011 in Düsseldorf , a year later the points for the Eurovision Song Contest 2012 in Baku .
