Saint Ralph - Miracles Are Possible is the title of a Canadian tragic comedy produced in 2004 .

action

14-year-old Ralph Walker lives in the Canadian city of Hamilton in 1954 as a student at a conservative Catholic school. The boy never met his father because he died as a soldier in World War II . His mother Emma Walker is in hospital with cancer . Ralph lets the school management believe that he is living with his grandparents, whose apologies his friend forges. He falls in love with Claire Collins, who is of the same age, but who doesn't want to know anything about him because she wants to become a nun . He is repeatedly mocked by older classmates, especially after he was caught masturbating in the city's public swimming pool. As a punishment for one of his offenses, he has to train on the cross-country team. Father Hibbert, who trains them, jokes the Boston Marathon and tells Ralph that it would be a miracle if a youngster wins there.

During one of his daily visits, his mother falls into a coma . Nurse Alice explains that it will only be a miracle that she will wake up from her coma.

Now Ralph has one goal in mind: he wants to take part in the marathon in 14 weeks and win it in order to wake up his mother. In an accident during physical education, God appears to him in the form of Santa Claus and tells him to work the miracle. This also means that Ralph strives - in vain - for purity and prayer.

The school principal, Father Fitzpatrick, tries to talk him out of participation because he regards the talk of miracles as blasphemy . Father Hibbert, who also ran a marathon as a young man and almost competed for Canada at the Olympic Games in Berlin in 1936 , recognizes Ralph's will to win and trains him.

In the spring of 1955, Ralph took part in the marathon in Boston without the principal's approval. Father Hibbert follows him and gives him spiritual and sporting support. To his great disappointment, Ralph finished sensationally second. In Hamilton he is then celebrated as a hero and accepted by his classmates and Father Fitzpatrick. Claire Collins fell in love with him.

In the early summer of 1955, Ralph's mother woke up from the coma.

Reviews

“A tragic comedy set in the glorified splendor of the 1950s with convincing, if somewhat stenciled characters. The very human film can be understood as a declaration of love for life and youth, celebrates their dreams and conjures up belief in their own strength. "
