Sam Waterston
Samuel Atkinson "Sam" Waterston (born November 15, 1940 in Cambridge , Massachusetts ) is an American film actor .
Life
Sam Waterston first studied at the Sorbonne in Paris . He then trained as an actor and in the following years initially worked as a theater actor in New York City . He made occasional appearances in minor films in the 1960s. It wasn't until his role as Nick Carraway in The Great Gatsby (1974) that he attracted some attention and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Young Actor.
After that, his career initially seemed to stagnate. Among his more famous films of that time include Rancho Deluxe with Jeff Bridges (1975) Capricorn One by Peter Hyams , agents Poker alongside Walter Matthau and Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate (the latter two in 1980). Woody Allen cast him in his films Inner Life (1978), Hannah and Her Sisters (1986), September (1987) and Crime and Other Trifles (1989). For his leading role in the war drama The Killing Fields (1984), he was nominated for an Oscar in 1985 for best male leading actor , but was defeated by F. Murray Abraham .
Waterston was also able to prevail on television. For the lead role as prosecutor Jack McCoy in the series Law & Order , which he impersonated in 368 episodes from 1994 to 2010, he was nominated three times for an Emmy . He received further nominations for his participation in the television film Die Glasmenagerie (1973) alongside Katharine Hepburn based on the play of the same name by Tennessee Williams as well as for the series I'll Fly Away (1991-1993). In 1993, Waterston won a Golden Globe Award for his role on the series .
On October 12, 2004, he received an honorary degree in art from the University of the South in Sewanee , Tennessee . On January 7, 2010, he was honored with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame . In 2011 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
He has been married to Lynn Louisa Woodruff for the second time since 1976. The two have three children together. His children James Waterston (* 1969, from his first marriage), Elisabeth Waterston (* 1976) and Katherine Waterston (* 1980) are also actors.
