The Atavillos Bajo district is located in the province of Huaral in Region Lima in Peru . The district was established on July 28, 1821. It has an area of ​​177 km². The 2017 census counted 976 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1807, in 2007 it was 1374. The administrative seat is the 1878  m high village of San Agustín de Huayopampa with 462 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Agustín de Huayopampa is located 45 km east-northeast of the provincial capital Huaral . The archaeological site of Rúpac is located on a ridge in the center of the district north of San Agustín de Huayopampa.

Geographical location

The Atavillos Bajo district is located in the Peruvian Western Cordillera in the central south of the Huaral Province. It has a lengthwise extension in WNW-ESE direction of 23 km and a width of about 8 km. The district is bounded in the west by the Río Chancay , in the south by its left tributary Río Anasmayo.

The Atavillos Bajo district is bordered to the south by the district Sumbilca , the west by the district Lampián , on the north by the district San Miguel de Acos , in the northeast on the district Atavillos Alto and on the east by the district of San Buenaventura ( Canta Province ).
