The district of San Nicolás is located in the province of Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald in the Ancash region in western Peru . The district was established on June 6, 1983. It has an area of ​​205 km². In the 2017 census, 3324 inhabitants were counted. In 1993 the population was 4401, in 2007 3922. The district administration is located in the 2875  m high town of San Nicolás with 820 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Nicolás is located 20 km northeast of the provincial capital San Luis .

Geographical location

The district of San Nicolás is located in the east of the province of Carlos Fermín Fitzcarrald. Along the northeastern district boundary , the Río Marañón flows northwards, along the northern district boundary its tributary Río Yanamayo to the east.

The district of San Nicolás borders in the southwest on the district of San Luis , in the west on the district Yauya , in the north on the districts Llama and Eleazar Guzmán Barrón (both in the province of Mariscal Luzuriaga ), in the Canchabamba and Pinra (both in the province of Huacaybamba ) , in the southeast to the districts of Chaccho and Mirgas (both in the province of Antonio Raymondi ) and in the extreme south to the district of Cajay ( province of Huari ).
