The Valera district is located in the Bongará province in the Amazonas region in northern Peru . The district was founded on November 3, 1933. It has an area of ​​78.9 km². The 2017 census counted 917 inhabitants. In 1993 the population was 1304, in 2007 it was 1262. The administrative seat is the 1920  m high village of San Pablo (also Valera) with 300 inhabitants (as of 2017). San Pablo is located 12.5 km southeast of the city of Pedro Ruiz Gallo . The highway from Pedro Ruiz Gallo to Chachapoyas runs along the Río Utcubamba in the southeast of the district .

Geographical location

The district of Valera is located in the northern Peruvian Andes in the extreme southwest of the province of Bongará. The district has a maximum longitudinal extent in NW-SE direction of almost 19 km and a maximum width of about 6 km. The Río Yurumarca, the Río Sonce and the Río Utcubamba flow along the southern and southwestern district boundaries and drain the area.

The Valera district is bordered by the Churuja district to the north-west, the San Carlos district to the north, the Jumbilla district to the east, the Sonche and Huancas districts to the south (both in the Chachapoyas province ) and the Lámud and San districts to the southwest Cristóbal (both in the province of Luya ).

Attractions

The Gocta waterfall in the neighboring district of San Carlos with a free fall height of 771 m is about 4 km northeast of San Pedro and is easiest to reach from the Valera district.
