Sandra Raluca Izbașa (born June 18, 1990 in Bucharest ) is a former Romanian gymnast .

Career

Sandra Izbașa was born on June 18, 1990 in Bucharest. At the age of four she started to do gymnastics at CSS Steaua Bucharest. She completed her first international competition in 2003.

At the 2006 European Championships in Volos, Izbașa won her first international title on the ground. In addition, she and the team won the silver medal and the bronze medal on the balance beam . In the same year she was able to win silver on the balance beam at the World Championships .

In 2007 she was able to confirm her good performance on the balance beam with a silver medal at the European Championships in Amsterdam. She also became vice European champion in the individual all-around. At the 2007 World Championships in Stuttgart she was third with the Romanian team.

Izbașa was able to repeat her silver medal win on the balance beam at the European Championships in 2008 . She was also European champion in Clermont-Ferrand with the team and on the ground.

Izbașa celebrated its greatest success so far at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. Here she won the gold medal on the floor .

In the 2009 World Championships in London Izbașa could not take part due to a ruptured Achilles tendon .

At the 4th European Individual Gymnastics Championships in 2011 in Berlin, Izbașa won gold twice: She was European champion on the vault and on the ground. At the following Olympic Games in London in 2012 , she achieved the bronze medal behind the Olympic champions from the USA and Russia in the team competition with the Romanian women's squad. Izbașa won the jump competition.

Awards

In 2008, Sandra Izbașa received the Order of Merit “Meritul sportiv” III from President Traian Băsescu . Class to be awarded the "Meritul sportiv" 1st class after her Olympic victory in August of the same year.
