history

Fishermen in Lake Malai in the 1930s

Sanirin was one of the traditional Timorese empires ruled by a liurai . It appears on a list by Afonso de Castro , a former governor of Portuguese Timor who listed 47 empires in 1868.

In the 18th century Sanirin took part in the Cailaco rebellion against the Portuguese.

In the 19th century, the Kemak of Sanirin were officially tribute to the Balibo Empire . In 1868 the Portuguese sent a force to Sanirin because the Liurai refused to pay taxes.

From 1894 onwards, Sanirin supported, along with other empires in the west of Portuguese Timor, Obulo and Marobo in the revolt against the Portuguese . In September 1895 the Timorese were able to destroy the force of Captain Eduardo da Câmara. All European officers were also killed, and Câmara was beheaded. Governor José Celestino da Silva then dispatched a punitive expedition that successively plagued the rebel empires and razed them to the ground. Lieutenant Francisco Duarte and Captain Francisco Elvaim commanded the force with almost 6,000 men, including 40 Portuguese. On the afternoon of August 13, 1896, they reached the fortified village of Dato-Lato (another source after Dato-Tolo ), which belongs to Sanirin, from the mountains, with drums and war cries. The Portuguese suspected the fugitive Liurai from Cotubaba , who had already moved on. As the residents' protests were not believed, the village was completely destroyed on the evening of August 17th, despite stubborn resistance. Some residents managed to escape by unleashing their water buffalo on the attackers. The looting and killing in Dato-Lato and the neighboring villages lasted all night. In the days that followed, other parts of Sanirin were also devastated. Lieutenant alone counted 104 heads that were cut off from the victims by the Timorese auxiliaries, including Brau Sacca, the "murderer" of Captain Câmara. The horror was so great that the rulers of Atsabe and Deribate, allied with Portugal, withdrew their warriors. The Portuguese therefore later also led a punitive expedition against Deribate, which resulted in hundreds more deaths.

Governor José Celestino da Silva declared the kingdom of Sanirin dissolved and placed it under the rule of Balibo.
