geography

St. Silvester is about 10 kilometers southeast of the city of Freiburg in the Senseoberland . It is the only German-speaking community whose area is on the far left of the Ärgera .

The limits of the community are those given by nature. In the north and east, the valley of the Ärgera separates with steep walls from the area of the communities of Giffers and Plasselb . In the west, the Rüedigrabe forms a deep cut and the border to the French-speaking community Le Mouret . In the south and south-east the ridge of the Muschenegg and the Muelersbach forms the border against Plasselb. Tentlingen is also one of the neighboring communities . The highest point in the municipality is the Chrüzflue ( 1263  m above sea level ), the lowest is 685  m above sea level. M. in the Nesslera and is formed by the River Ärgera.

coat of arms

Blazon : In blue on a green hill and between two natural trees, the parish church of St Sylvester in natural colors.

The coat of arms was only adopted in 1941 and shows, like a photograph, the parish church consecrated to St. New Year's Eve on a green hill, flanked by two prominent trees. These two trees also frame the church in reality: an old winter linden on the side of the sacristy and a large elm at the main entrance.

history

The place where the parish church stands today was called Baselgin in the early Middle Ages . The oldest mention of the name St. Silvester dated to 1148 and designated a chapel that Pope Sylvester I was ordained. This chapel was widely known in the area, which is why the name St. Silvester later also referred to the entire area around the consecrated site. Holy New Year's Eve is invoked as the patron of the protection of animals and their feed. Even today it is customary in the community to place sacrificial figurines (Fraueli, Mannli, cows, horses, sheep, goats, pigs and chickens) on the sacrificial table on Patron's Day. Holy New Year's Eve is asked as an intercessor that he may obtain God's protection for people and animals, house and yard.

From 1630 to 1859 St. Silvester belonged to the parish of Giffers, and since then it has formed its own parish. In 1630 St. New Year's Eve was shot by Giffers, the so-called mussel shot. The current village of St. Silvester was named Zur Schür until the 1960s . Up until then there was no actual village called St. Silvester.

regional customs

The feast of the namesake is celebrated on New Year's Eve with a solemn high mass in the church. On this occasion, the pastor receives a large wheel of cheese and ham. These gifts are traditionally donated by the tenants of the Spitalvorsasse (behind St. Silvester in the Plasselb community) and the Spitalgantrisches (in the Muscherenschlund, Plaffeien community ). The tradition goes back to a vow made on the occasion of a cattle epidemic. There is evidence that this praise has been held since at least 1680.
