Verviers-Central equestrian station

The riding station , also the saddle station and through station in the low track position , is a railway station system in which the reception building is like a bridge across the track system , it stands above the tracks. There is no need for a boarding hall. Stairs, ramps or elevators lead down from the station building to the platforms .

Hamburg Central Station , built between 1903 and 1906, belongs to this type of station, even if the track system is covered by a large common station hall and, together with other structures, gives the impression of a terminus station from street level .

Another well-known example is the Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe station , which opened in 1991 on the new Hanover-Würzburg line . The reception building of the train station in Berlin Gesundbrunnen was subsequently built on an existing concrete slab based on the Kassel model in 2014 and opened in March 2015. Part of the building at Potsdam Central Station, which opened in its current form in 1999, is also located above the tracks. Another equestrian station in Germany is the Aumühle station . The Frankfurt airport long-distance train station , opened in 2003, is also a riding station. The lobby can only be reached from one side.

Wiedikon station with signal box tin house

The Zurich S-Bahn station Wiedikon is the only equestrian station in Switzerland. The left bank of the Zürichseebahn became a Gotthardbahn feeder in 1897 with the breakthrough of the Zimmerberg . At the beginning of the 20th century, the increasing volume of traffic forced the SBB to move the Seebahn underground in the area of the city of Zurich. It was moved into an open ditch between the apron of the main train station and Wollishofen and electrified. With this, Wiedikon received a new train station, which was built by city architect Hermann Herter as a riding station in the New Building style . The tracks have been running in the Seebahn incision since 1927 and go under the Wiedikon station building and the former signal box.

special cases

Several stations are also through stations with low tracks, but in contrast to the riding stations, they consist of a reception building in high position next to the tracks. This is followed by an overpass at the same height from which the platforms can be reached. Some of these stations also have a platform hall . These include Lübeck Hauptbahnhof , Amersfoort Centraal , Heidelberg Hauptbahnhof or Darmstadt Hauptbahnhof . The Dülmen station combines this model with the construction of the tower station .
