The Saubach is a 7.4 km long left tributary of the Inde in the Eschweiler-Stolberg area in the North Rhine-Westphalian city region of Aachen .

geography

It rises in the western Propsteier forest and flows around its southwest and southern flank in an easterly direction. The Merzbach, flowing north, has its source near its source and the ore mine Grube Glücksburg was located .

Since 1935, when the largely cleared south-western part of the Propsteier Forest, the so-called Steinbachshochwald , was removed from Eschweiler to Stolberg , its lower third, together with its confluence with the Inde , has been running on the Stolberg area.

Before it flows into the Inde at the Steinfurt sewage treatment plant , it picks up heavy contamination from the so-called Vegla polders (including humic acid and hydrogen sulfide ) and from the waste dump of the former Rhenania AG chemical factory ( dilute acid ) in Stolberg- Atsch .

According to the 2001 water quality report from the North Rhine-Westphalia State Environment Agency, the Saubach had the highest pollution level with water quality class IV.

In 2007, a treatment plant for leachate from the Vegla polders was put into operation on the northern company premises of Saint Gobain Glass , and the discharge into the Inde has been cleaner since then.
