The Saulakopf , also called Saulenkopf , is a 2517 m high mountain in the Zimba group in the Rätikon , a mountain range in the western central Alps in the Austrian state of Vorarlberg . Due to its massive size at the western end of the Rellstal, it has a large geographical dominance towards the east, which is due to its over 400 meters high east wall . Its southern flank appears as a rugged rock; to the west runs a strongly jagged ridge with a secondary peak, the 2,498 meter high Saulaköpfli . The north flank, which is easy to climb, forms a flat roof with a maximum incline of 35 ° . Due to its favorable location and easy climbing, the mountain is a popular excursion destination. Exact information on a first ascent of the Saulakopf in the 19th century is not available.

Surroundings

The Saulakopf belongs to the Zimba group and is located about four kilometers as the crow flies southeast of the tourist resort of Brand in the Brandnertal and a good seven kilometers west of Vandans in the Montafon Valley . Neighboring mountains are in the south, separated by the alpine path crossing Saulajoch at 2065 meters above sea level, the Schafgafall lying north above the Lünersee at 2414 meters high, in the north, connected by a ridge curved to the west and north, is the 2557 meter high Brandner Mittagsspitze and finally to the northeast, beyond the Kanzlatälis , the main mountain of the group, the 2643 meter high Zimba .

Bases and paths

The base for an ascent of the Zimba group is the Heinrich-Hueter-Hütte located above the Rellstal at 1766 meters above sea level . The normal route to the Saulakopf leads from the hut in a north-westerly direction up to the Kanzlatäli, then west and south over scree and Schrofen to the summit cross . According to the literature, walking time is a good two hours. In winter this is an easy and popular ski tour . From the Saulajoch to the south, a path was built in 1970 to the summit, which has rope insurances in places , the Saulakopfsteig . The walking time from the hut is a good two and a half hours. Another base is the Douglasshütte (1973 m) on the north bank of the Lünersee . Other routes to the Saulakopf lead as classic alpine climbing tours through the east face in the degrees of difficulty UIAA II to V- . According to literature, the Saulakopf east face was climbed for the first time in 1920 by P. Wisiol, Fräulein Martinek and E. Mathies .

Since June 2007 a via ferrata (C / D key point E) has also led through the east wall and the south-east ridge to the summit.
