Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark is a horror film by André Øvredal , which was released in US cinemas on August 9, 2019 and in German cinemas on October 31, 2019. The horror stories of the US children's book author Alvin Schwartz from the 1990s, which are provided with illustrations by Stephen Gammell , were used as a template for the film .

action

In 1968 in the small town of Mill Valley, USA. A group of teenagers, led by a girl named Stella, stumble upon a mysterious book in an abandoned house that was once written by a certain Sarah Bellows. She once lived in the town in a mansion. The girl had mysterious powers. Instead of being read by the teenagers, the book reads their thoughts and thus describes creepy stories about their fears.

production

The film is based on the horror stories of the US children's book author Alvin Schwartz from the 1990s, in which a group of teenagers investigates mysterious and gruesome deaths in their small town. According to producer Guillermo del Toro , adapting Schwartz's The Dream was a particular challenge. The story is about a pale woman, a very ethereal figure, with a blissful little smile that makes her seem almost cute, but what makes her all the more creepy, so del Toro. He and the Norwegian director André Øvredal decided to combine Schwartz's stories into a single story. About the protagonist he installed, del Toro said: “Usually in these stories there are a couple of guys who have a girl as a mate. I wanted to turn that around and make her [Stella] the leader. ”Øvredal explained that they didn't want to get too young by doing this, but should have taken into account the fact that the books are intended for younger audiences.

At the start of shooting in summer 2018, del Toro and Øvredal announced the cast for the horror thriller, such as the up-and-coming actors Michael Garza , Austin Abrams , Gabriel Rush and Zoe Colletti . In September 2018, the cast with Dean Norris , Gil Bellows and Lorraine Toussaint followed .

Filming began on August 27, 2018 and ended on October 26, 2018 in Ontario. In the spring of 2019, Del Toro stated that he was obsessed with all of Schwartz's work, but especially with the absolutely crazy illustrations of Stephen Gammell's books that he and Øvredal were dying to use for the film. When del Toro discovered this a few decades earlier, he was deeply impressed and bought nine of the “most important illustrations” from the book. To bring Gammell's characters into the film, the drawings were reproduced in three dimensions and clothed. This was done without the use of CGI. According to director Øvredal, it was never planned to make a brutal or bloody horror film. As a filmmaker, he is more interested in tension, fear and thrills than in graphic violence, which is why the PG-13 film approval was never questioned.

Marco Beltrami and Anna Drubich compose the film music . The soundtrack, which comprises a total of 18 pieces of music, is scheduled to be released for download on August 30, 2019 by Entertainment One Music.

A first trailer was presented at the beginning of June 2019. The film was released in US cinemas on August 9, 2019. At the end of September 2019 it was presented as a graduation film at the Fantasy Film Festival . A theatrical release in Germany took place on October 31, 2019.

The production budget was around $ 25 million.

reception

Age rating

In the US, the film was rated PG-13 by the MPAA . Del Toro said they wanted to go on a family adventure and describes the result as a nice family horror movie. In Germany, the film was only released by the FSK from the age of 16. The reason for the release states that the story, which was emphatically dark from the start, with a long arc of suspense, is told with many puzzling scenes and moments of horror and shows individual, drastic horror images , which could emotionally overwhelm children and adolescents under 16 years of age due to the effectively intensified staging.

Reviews and grossing results

So far, the film has won over 79 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

The special interest magazine Neon Zombie wrote that with Scary Stories to tell in the Dark , director Øvredal created a "wonderfully staged horror film" that "surprisingly pointedly teaches the viewer to fear".

The worldwide revenue from theatrical screenings to date is 104 million US dollars.
