geography

course

Schäflibach in Urdorf with tank wall

The stream rises as Chräbsbach at 543  m above sea level. M. just inside the Rameren forest area and just outside the WSL site in the municipality of Uitikon . It initially flows to the northwest and after around 40 meters takes on the Grossmattbach, which is longer here, from the right and, after another 60 meters, the Sürenloobach, which also joins on the right .

After its confluence, it flows to west-northwest and forms the northern edge of the forest of the Rameren . It runs for less than 10 meters in the community of Birmensdorf, and again crosses under a nameless path in Uitikon, after which it is accompanied on the right by a dirt road. It passes a small pond that lies within the forest and shortly afterwards takes in the village stream coming from Uitikon from the right near Chilenstud . It is bridged by Zürcherstrasse , after which it marks the municipal boundary between Uitikon and Birmensdorf. At the same time, it now forms a small ravine that extends just inside the Rameren and flows in several arches to the west.

At Leerbreiti it leaves the forest area on its northwestern border and runs again to the northwest. It is initially accompanied by a narrow, dense forest, which after an arc to the southwest and passing a pond turns into narrow but dense trees. After a larger curve to the north, there is another narrow forest. In this the stream turns to the west-northwest and shortly afterwards reaches the Iltismoos retention basin . Here it crosses a small pond, which is enclosed by the forest, and takes in the water of the Chalchtarenbach coming from the right .

The Chräbsbach passes under the embankment of the Zurich – Zug railway line , which serves as a dam, and is now called the Stockacherbach. The brook flows here to the north-northwest, where it is again lined with a narrow forest and on the right bank near Stockächer passes a family garden area and the tennis courts of the Weihermatt tennis club . Here it curves to the west and continues to flow to the northwest. Immediately afterwards, he passes the Urdorf artificial ice rink on the right side of the stream as well as the outdoor swimming pool and the Weihermatt sports field . It reaches the Wüestmatt , where it takes its most important tributary from the left with the Allmendbach .

It turns briefly to the north and directly again to the north-northwest and after around 80 meters reaches the settlement area of Oberurdorf . It crosses a path and the Bachstrasse , which follows the brook on the right. It crosses under Mühlegasse , Ankerstrasse and again Bachstrasse at the intersection with Kirchgasse . The road now follows the brook on the left and the Obermattbach flows from the left , which is overturned along its entire course and comes from the Im Spitzler road . After its confluence, the stream is called Schäflibach.

The Schäflibach overturns under the Birmensdorferstrasse and after about 125 meters comes to the surface again on the left side of the street and opposite the post office. It follows the road to the north-northwest and at the same time forms the western boundary of Urdorf. On the left bank, a field path accompanies the stream, which is lined with loose trees. Another family garden area follows on the left bank before the Schäflibach reaches Niederurdorf . Here he is overturned for 60 meters at the same time, whereby he also crosses under the Dorfstrasse . After the brook comes to the surface again, it directly forms the western border of the Urdorf industrial area on its now northwestern course. Shortly thereafter, he turns to the north and increases from left to the forest area Honeret herkommenden Bachtobel ditch on.

The stream changes its direction again to north-northwest and passes under the A3 , under which the dolten Bröggenbach ( Chesslerbach ) flows from the right . There is an open section between the motorway and the motorway exit before it also crosses under it. After a more open section, you will pass under Bernstrasse , after which the Schäflibach forms the municipal boundary between Urdorf and Dietikon. Accompanied by a narrow wood, it flows slightly deeper to the northwest, before it turns to the north-northwest at the family gardens in Vogelau and now runs entirely through Dietikon. He crosses the Vogelaustrasse and takes a small bow to the west, according to the left of Vogelaubach opens. It then flows mainly northwards, passing under Schöneggstrasse and Zürcherstrasse as well as the Zurich – Baden railway line , before finally reaching 385  m above sea level. M. coming from the left and south into the Limmat.

A few meters before the Limmat, the Schäflibach flows under the 4.7 meter long Schäflibach Bridge. The oldest railway bridge ( Spanish-Brötli-Bahn ) in Switzerland was put into operation on August 9, 1847.
