The parish village lies in the deeply cut valley of the Lochau . The Erbach coming from the north flows into the town as a right tributary. history

Schönfeld was first mentioned in a document in 1119 when it was given as a gift to Michelfeld Monastery . The original name of the place was Sconefeld after the Lords of Sconenfeld, who should have had their seat in the place at that time. District architect Stuhlfauth reports in his prehistory and early history of Upper Franconia that the area around Schönfeld and Hollfeld was already inhabited in prehistoric times. During excavations in 1907, a spoon-shaped, slender hand ax and a heel ax with beginning lobes were found, finds that point to the Bronze Age.

The humanist and theologian Erasmus Neustetter called Stürmer was born in Schönfeld.

On January 1, 1972, Schönfeld was incorporated into Hollfeld.

Parish church

The Catholic parish church has the name Cross Finding (Latin: Inventio S. Crucis) and was built in the years 1619-1625. It emerged from the castle chapel.
