Shamal Musagalievna Kanlybayeva

Shamal Mussagalijewna Kanlybajewa ( Russian Жамал Мусагалиевна Канлыбаева ; born June 25, 1923 in Semipalatinsk ; † February 2, 1974 in Alma-Ata ) was a Soviet geologist , mine separator and university teacher .

Life

Kanlybajewa came from a working-class family who moved frequently. In 1931 she started school in the second grade. In 1940 she began studying at the Kazakh Institute for Mining and Metallurgy in the geology department. After one semester , she was transferred to the Department of Mine Surveillance, where she completed her studies in 1946. Her diploma project, which she defended with honors, was carried out in the Leninogorsk mines .

In 1946 Kanlybayeva became a research assistant at the Mining Institute of the Academy of Sciences of the Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic (AN-KasSSR). There she then became head of the Department of Mine Surveys. In 1951 Kanlybejewa was the first Kazakh woman to successfully defend her dissertation , supervised by Stepan Gawrilowitsh Averschin , on the calculation of surface motion through underground mining in the Karabass for her doctorate as a candidate in technical sciences in 1952. She attended the international rock mechanics congress in Krakow in 1963 and in 1964 USA , where she was the only woman among the participants from 14 countries.

In 1965 Kanlybajewa successfully defended her doctoral dissertation on the regularity and investigation methodology of the rock movement processes in the bedrock and some problems of underground mining using the example of the karabass for a doctorate in technical sciences. She had used radioactive isotopes for the first time to investigate rock movements . In 1968 she was appointed professor . She has given guest lectures at the Universities of Newcastle , Sheffield , Nottingham , Imperial College London and at the École polytechnique and École des mines in Paris . She is the author of 65 publications and supervised 12 candidate dissertations.

Kanlybayeva was elected a corresponding member of the AN-KasSSR in 1970. She was the chairman of the Scientific Council of the Mining Institute of the AN-KasSSR and a member of the Scientific Council of the Polytechnic Institute which emerged from the Kazakh Mining and Metallurgy Institute. She was an advisor to the KaragandaUgol Combine . She was a member of the Supreme Soviet of the KasSSR in the 7th session. In 1968 she became a member of the Presidium of the Committee of Soviet Women.

Kanlybajewa was married to Kazakhstan's chief inspector for occupational safety and had a daughter Gulnara, who became a musicologist, and a son Rustem and grandson.

Kanlybayeva died as a result of inadequate care after an operation. A documentary film describes her life and work.
