The inland shipyard Philipp Ebert and Sons in Neckarsteinach was founded in 1738. and has been family-owned since that year. It is the only remaining shipyard in Hessen .
history
Shipbuilding in the Neckar area was in the hands of three families, including the Ebert family, one of the most important families in shipbuilding along the Neckar . The shipbuilding dynasty Ebert has been building ships in Neckarsteinach since 1738 . At the shipyard Philipp Ebert und Sons, wooden ships, barges and fishing boats were initially manufactured, which were used in the stone industry , among other things . The first iron ship to be put into service on the Neckar was also built at the shipyard.
shipbuilding
In 1933 the wagon ferry for Neckarhausen was built and delivered by the Ebert and Sons shipyard. In 1958 the ferry was equipped with an outboard motor from the Ebert company, which had an output of 10 hp. A diesel-powered ferry was also built at the Philipp Ebert und Söhne shipyard for the Haßmersheim ferry as part of the Neckar canalisation .
In 1941 six pioneer landing craft were built and delivered for the Wehrmacht . Four landing craft of the type PiLb 39 had a length of 15 m, width of 4.65 m and an 84 HP propulsion by a MWM four-stroke diesel engine, two larger ones of the type PiLb 40 for 150 men had a 172 HP propulsion by a four-stroke diesel engine.
In the period from 1934 to the present day, over 100 ships were built at this shipyard , and from the 1980s on, container ships with a load capacity of up to 3000 t were also built. In 1987 the container ship Jean Bossler was delivered from the shipyard to the entrepreneur Werner Boßler . It was the most modern container ship built at the shipyard in 1987. The barge became known as the Excelsior under the flag of the Götz shipping company in 2007 when it was involved in an accident on the Rhine in which it lost 32 containers and the Rhine was subsequently blocked for a long time. Philipp Ebert & Söhne GmbH reacted to the economic difficulties faced by the shipyards on the Neckar in the 1970s by looking for and found new partners from Eastern Europe for hull insurance. Between 1994 and 2010, 40 hulls were built for the shipyard in Romania and Ukraine and sold to Western Europe .
Today barges built and carried out maintenance work and repairs. This includes renovation work, reengineering, installing bow thrusters and hydraulic lift systems for ship wheelhouses. There is also a winter storage facility for sports boats .
The local ferry, which was decommissioned in Haßmersheim in 2014 , was converted at the Philipp Ebert und Söhne shipyard for the Federal Garden Show in Heilbronn .
