Schill Malz, Worms

Schill Malz was one of the large malting groups in Germany. Sales in the 2009/2010 financial year amounted to EUR 67.1 million. The customers were mostly breweries all over Germany and worldwide. Schill Malz held 100% stakes in the companies Rhein-Ruhr Malz GmbH and Thuringian Malz.

history

The company was founded in 1859 by Simon Friedrich Schill in Osthofen as a pure commercial malt house. This made it the oldest company in its branch that did not emerge from a brewery malt house. The founder, who was a winemaker and farmer , malted brewing barley from his own cultivation and sold the malt to the local breweries . From small beginnings, Schill Malz grew into one of the leading malting groups in Germany. The company has been run by members of the Schill family for five generations. In 2013 Peter Schill resigned as managing director of the company, his successor was Roger Woodley.

Up to 2017, Schill Malz produced and sold around 140,000 tons of brewing malt annually from two production sites in Germany to customers in Germany and around the world. The malting plants of the Schill Malz Group were located in Worms and Mülheim an der Ruhr . On February 1, 2017, the Michael Weyermann malt factory took over the plant in Clingen . A wage malting agreement existed with the Kalscheuren malt factory in Hürth until it was closed in 2012. The plant in Sangerhausen was closed in 2014. The administrative seat of Schill Malz has been Osthofen since it was founded in 1859.

In 2000, Schill Malz founded the GlobalMalt network with the Hamburg Tivoli Malz GmbH and in 2006 merged with the malt division of Caspar Thywissen GmbH , which brought the Mülheim / Ruhr plant into the group, to form German Malt .

After the sale of the sales company and a stake in Poland, the company was taken over by the Australian GrainCorp Group in 2011 and today operates again under the original name Schill Malz . GrainCorp is an internationally active listed company that is active in the trading and processing of grain. The Malzsparte of Grain Corp , GrainCorp Malt , malt houses operates in Australia, Canada, USA and the UK and, with a total production of around 1.4 million tonnes of malt of the largest malting groups worldwide.

Schill Malz was a member of the Deutscher Mälzerbund eV and a sponsoring member of the experimental and training institute for breweries in Berlin .

The Schill Malz GmbH & Co. KG was disbanded at the end of February 8th, 2018.

technology

Schill Malz was the first company in the industry to commission a static tower malt house, thereby setting a standard that is still valid today for the industry. The company used this technology in the Worms and Mülheim plants. Saladin boxes were used in Sangerhausen and transfer boxes in Clingen based on the Lausmann system.

production

In selecting the varieties and provenances of the raw materials barley and wheat, the company worked closely with breeders and producers, agricultural research institutions and breweries.

The product range of Schill Malz included Pilsener malt, Viennese and Munich malt, wheat malt, roasted malt, sour malt and, via the GrainCorp network, also specialty malts such as roasted and caramel malts as well as whiskey malts. 30–40 percent of production was exported to other European countries, South America and Africa.

Schill Malz had an EU organic certificate and a certificate from Bioland for malt from organic farming .

bad luck

On November 30, 2008, after a fire in a silo at Schill Malz's Worms-Rheindürkheim plant, there was a serious explosion. During the fire brigade operation, a firefighter was killed by falling concrete parts, another seven firefighters were injured, some seriously, including the then chief of operations, who was then dependent on a wheelchair and who later took his own life. A few days later, in December 2008, another fire broke out in the silo; this fire could be extinguished with nitrogen without incident. The action brought by the Unfallkasse Rheinland-Pfalz against Schill Malz was rejected by the Mainz regional court .
