history
The original Elfershausen Castle was built in 1562 under Christoph Heinrich von Erthal . His son Georg Eyrich von Erthal rebuilt the castle in 1600. The Mainz bailiff in Lohr am Main , Philipp Christoph von und zu Erthal , was born in this former castle from 1600 in 1689 . In 1747 he had this palace complex torn down in order to rebuild it. However, that did not happen. He died in 1748. Today's so-called "castle", in which the town hall of the market town of Elfershausen is housed, is only the residential building that he built in 1747 for his estate manager on the area of the former castle. Today only the original coat of arms above the entrance to the town hall testifies to this former castle.
In 1805, the Coudenhove family inherited Elfershausen Castle together with the other ancestral estates of the von Erthal family, which died in the same year. In 1905 the castle went to Jewish owners. During the National Socialist era , the castle was owned by the municipality; During this time the establishment of a food factory in the castle was planned. The property then served as accommodation for refugees and resettlers until 1968.
After 1968 the community began to use the castle for administrative purposes. From 1976 onwards, offices were created on the property. In the 1980s there was a temporary doctor's practice in the castle, the premises of which are now used by the financial administration.
In 1988 extensive renovation of the castle began.
