history
The castle is believed to have been built in the second half of the 12th century. The builders were members of the old Bavarian noble family of Babones , who appeared as Burgraves of Regensburg , Landgraves of Stefling and Counts of Riedenburg .
After the Burgraves of Regensburg and Landgraves von Stefling died out in 1196, the castle passed to Duke Ludwig I of Bavaria .
Through the house contract of Pavia the castle came to Emperor Ludwig IV in 1329. When Bavaria was divided for the third time in 1392, the castle fell to the Duchy of Bavaria-Munich . It was incorporated into the Munich Rent Office and was often pledged in the following years. From around 1330 to 1367 the lords of Wolfstein and Hilpoltstein, from 1384 to 1424 the counts of Abensberg and from 1424 the lords of Muggenthal owned the castle.
During the Peasants' War , the plant was captured by insurgents in April 1525 and largely destroyed. It was rebuilt between 1556 and 1560. During the Thirty Years War , the castle was plundered several times between 1632 and 1634. In 1703 the castle was conquered by the Austrians during the War of the Spanish Succession . During the Austrian War of Succession , the castle a. a. 1745 used by the Austrian army as winter quarters.
The well-preserved complex now serves as a castle museum. There is also a Falkenhof Schloss Rosenburg, founded in 1978, on the grounds of the castle . The facility was extensively renovated in 2014/15.
