location

Location of the palace gardens in the center of Karlsruhe

The palace garden is located at the center of the radial Karlsruhe city plan on the north side of the palace in the former area of the Hardtwald , which is connected to the garden to the north. It is part of the landscape protection area (LSG) Nördliche Hardt , which extends to the city limits and merges into the LSG Hardtwald north of Karlsruhe in the neighboring district of Karlsruhe . A 15-kilometer-long protected park and forest area, which is also designated as the Hardtwald FFH area between Graben and Karlsruhe , begins right next to Karlsruhe city center . Approx. 500 meters of this belong to the palace gardens.

The Deer Gate on the east side of the park

The irregular shape of the palace garden is limited by a stone wall or aha . In the south the garden borders on the castle, in the south-west on the botanical garden . In the west and north, the castle garden has a circular border with the Ahaweg. The eastern boundary runs straight as an extension of Friedrichstaler Allee and on the southern section in a circle around the castle. To the east of the palace garden is the pheasant garden.

The typical fan shape of Karlsruhe can only partially be found in the palace garden. Richard-Willstätter-Allee, Blankenlocher Allee, Blaue Strahl and Moltkestrasse (formerly Mühlburger Allee ) run as rays from the castle tower through the castle garden. More rays begin outside the garden. The south campus of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the Federal Constitutional Court are located in the immediate vicinity of the palace gardens .

history

The creation of the palace gardens goes back to Margrave Karl Wilhelm , who founded Karlsruhe in 1715. At first, unusual for the 18th century , a baroque garden was laid out not behind but in front of the castle . Exotic plants, especially tulips , were planted on today's Schlossplatz . From 1731 to 1746 the court gardener Christian Thran laid out today's palace garden in the French baroque style behind the palace.

Karl Wilhelm's successor, his grandson Grand Duke Karl Friedrich , took over the government in 1746 and had areas of the garden redesigned by the court gardeners Johann Bernhard Saul and Philipp Ludwig Müller. Between 1767 and 1773 the western part was laid out as a Chinese garden, the center of which was a garden house. A terrace overlooked an artificially created valley. The valley and a cave have been preserved from the complex and border the orangery .

Schlossgartensee

From 1787 Friedrich Schweickardt took over the redesign of the palace garden to an English landscape garden . In 1789 a joiner's workshop was set up in the palace garden. At the end of the 18th century the garden was temporarily open to the citizens, but some regulations applied. For example, it was forbidden to smoke tobacco and let pigs and geese roam freely on the promenades.

From 1808 the botanical garden was laid out. In 1856, the rear palace garden began to be redesigned by the court gardener Karl Mayer, and the palace garden lake was created between 1864 and 1873. In 1884 the Weinbrenner Temple was relocated from the Hereditary Prince Garden to the north-western area of the palace garden.

Pavilion for the 300th anniversary of the city

On the occasion of the Federal Horticultural Show in 1967 , the palace garden was renewed and further developed in the style of an English landscape park. The Schlossgartensee was also redesigned and the Schlossgartenbahn was put into operation. Originally it was planned to only operate the railway during the Federal Garden Show, but it was not dismantled afterwards.

In 2001, a band of 1645 blue majolica tiles was laid from the castle tower to the majolica factory located on the northwestern edge of the castle garden , on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the factory.

In 2015, many events took place in the palace garden as part of the 300th birthday of the city. A wooden pavilion designed by Jürgen Mayer H. was erected as a temporary structure for this purpose .
