Architecture and history

According to an inscription on the threshold , the half-timbered house was built for Johannes Doringk in 1592. The half-timbered structure of the Renaissance- style building is richly decorated. The fan rosettes on the wooden base angles and full circles with compass ornaments are striking. There are also ship throats and cylinder beam heads . The three-storey courtyard wing was built around 1660. In the 18th century, the lower storey was reshaped. The two-part Klöntür and the shutters date from this period .

In the 1960s, the structural condition had deteriorated considerably. In 1968 the Institute for Monument Preservation of the City of Quedlinburg offered aid to carry out repairs. However, due to a lack of available construction companies, the funds could not be called up.

From 1975 to 1977, when the facade was preserved, the building was largely renovated using massive construction, using Polish specialists from the Polish National Monument Preservation Workshops (Pracownie Konserwacji Zabytków, PKZ), Thorn division . At that time, the PKZ was of the opinion that a permanent renovation of half-timbered buildings was only possible through massive construction. The result was walls 36 centimeters thick with solid ceilings. The historical half-timbered facade was inserted into these walls and is supported by the walls. In addition, there were special requirements for fire protection , as it was intended to be used as construction workers' accommodation and later as a youth hostel . Against this background, the project was also confirmed by the Institute for Monument Protection. Due to this type of construction, however, large parts of the historical wooden structures, the room layout and equipment elements such as doors and stairs and a fireplace in the side wing disappeared. Decorative elements consisting of black and red comma lines and trimmings that were originally preserved inside were also lost.

Originally the building was longer. Three containers now belong to the building on Schmale Strasse 12, which is adjacent to the south.

The gate barn belonging to the property was built in the 18th century.
