history

Schulau belonged to the Schauenburg rule of Pinneberg and was first mentioned in 1419 in connection with the port in the Hanseatic League . The name Schulau is made up of the Low German "schulen" (high German seeking protection ) and the "Au" . Ships could take shelter in the Liethgraben. The Schulau harbor was only laid out in 1898/99 .

In 1855 Schulau had 204 inhabitants, most of whom worked as ship carpenters and boatmen because of the location directly on the Elbe .

In 1892 the village of Spitzerdorf was integrated into the Schulau community.

As a result of the settlement of industrial companies and the resulting influx of workers, the population rose to around 2400 around 1900. In 1928 the Wedel thermal power station went into operation on Schulauer Elbufer , which was one of the energy suppliers to the neighboring city of Altona / Elbe and was owned by HEW after World War II and by Vattenfall until 2019 before it was taken over by Wärme Hamburg .

From 1891 to 1932 a sugar factory produced in Schulau , which from 1901 to 1931 had its own rack railway connection to the banks of the Elbe.

Schulau was an independent village until 1909 and was then incorporated into Wedel.
