The Seeheimer Düne (also called Bickenbacher Düne) is an FFH area and extensive natural monument in the district of Seeheim , municipality of Seeheim-Jugenheim in the Darmstadt-Dieburg district in southern Hesse. The drifting sand dune is a habitat for numerous rare and endangered animal and plant species.

location

The "Seeheimer Düne" is located in the natural area of the Hessian Rhine Plain at 120 meters above sea level. It belongs to the approximately 10 kilometer wide belt of drifting sand dunes between Darmstadt and Rastatt , in which calcareous sands were blown into dunes at the end of the last ice age. The protected area is located about 250 m west of the outskirts of Seeheim and directly east of federal highway 3 . It covers an area of 0.6980 hectares.

Protection goals

The Seeheimer dune is characterized by an outstandingly developed population of the habitat types "dry, calcareous sandy grasslands" (LRT 6120) and "sub-Pannonian steppe dry grasslands" (LRT 6240). In Central Europe, steppe lawns only occur like islands on some drifting sand dunes in the Upper Rhine Plain. The sand biotopes are habitat for numerous highly endangered plant and animal species, including the sand silver gap . As a maintenance goal, the open, nutrient-poor sandy lawn areas should be preserved. In addition, maintenance measures such as de-bushing, annual grazing by donkeys and sheep, or mowing should take place.

history

The application for protection was made in July 1940. At that time, the dune area must have been much larger, since its core area alone was given as one hectare. There was considerable resistance in the community to use the area to grow asparagus. Finally, the Seeheimer dune was designated by ordinance of November 28, 1955, published on December 1, 1955 as an extensive natural monument "Bickenbacher dune". This designation was not clear, because there was another dune south of Bickenbach (east of federal highway 3 in the hall "Hohsand", which is now completely overbuilt with residential areas).

Major parts of the dune had already been damaged by the time it was expelled. Despite being placed under protection, part of the area was excavated in 1962 to fill sandbags. After 1962, there was wild garbage and debris deposits along the main road, which severely impaired the protected area. Instead of being removed, they were covered with sand from the dune, with about three quarters of the area of the natural monument being destroyed. In 1971 the steppe lawn slowly began to regenerate from the remains. In 1980 a riding hall was illegally built on the site of the natural monument. After the construction freeze, the protected area was reduced again by a request for deviation.

Since 1984, care measures have ensured the preservation of the rare sand and steppe biotopes. In 2005, the previously isolated area was connected to the sand turf further south through a newly created sand fill. By ordinance of January 16, 2008, the Seeheimer Düne was protected with identical delimitation as a Natura2000 area (FFH area 6217-302).

Flora and fauna

The special plants in the protected area include hairy awl grass , Baden bluegrass , common coniferous herb , steppe spurge , sand strawflower , summer arum species, sand stone herb , sand silver wedge , blue-green schiller grass , yellow sun rose , sand violet and sand radmelde . In addition, ball leek , Hügel-Meier , ear-spoon-catchfly , scented scabies and real feather grass are mentioned.

The lichen Cladonia ciliata has a nationally significant occurrence in the steppe grasslands . 40 types of fungus have been identified, including dune stinkhorn , black-chested stem bovist , eyelashed stem bovist and winter stem bovist .

Sand lizards and slow worms live in the area . Red tube spider , dune tiger beetle , sky-blue blues and milkweed hawks are active in the sandy grass. Eighteen species of locusts inhabit the area, including the blue-winged wasteland insect , the vineyard and the spotted club insect . 125 species of wild bees were recorded, including 33 species on the Red List. Among the 17 species of snail are the endangered striped heather snail and the common heather snail .

Impairments

The sand and steppe lawns are endangered by the emergence of woody trees. In places the highly competitive, unfamiliar land riding grass spreads .
