Sefer Yılmaz (born January 22, 1969 in Bursa ) is a former Turkish football player and today's coach.

Player career

The beginnings of Yılmaz's playing career are largely undocumented. As a first recorded activity he played at the age of nineteen in the 1989/90 season for the second division club Kocaelispor . He made his competitive debut for Kocaelispor on February 8, 1989 in the cup match against Beşiktaş Istanbul . He finished the season with his club as seventh in the table, with Yılmaz himself being used in 12 league appearances. In the second division season, Yılmaz established himself as a regular player and top performer. So he ended the season with 28 league appearances in which he scored 10 goals. As a defensive player, he was by far the most successful goalscorer of his team. This experienced a difficult season and only secured relegation on the last day of the game. The 1990/91 season Yılmaz played with his team for a long time for the second division championship and finally ended the season behind Samsunspor as runner-up. Yılmaz finished the season with 22 appearances and six goals. At the end of the 1991/92 season he celebrated the hoped-for championship with his team and thus rose to the 1st Lig . Yılmaz was one of the most important performers of his team with 35 competitive appearances. This season, Yılmaz also caused a surprise in the Turkish Cup . The team reached the semi-finals as the second division and was eliminated 1-0 against local rivals and first division Bursaspor . Promoted to the 1st Lig Yılmaz 'team advanced to the surprise team of the first division season 1992/93 . The team took the lead in the standings from the start of the season and surprisingly became autumn champions . In the second half of the season Kocaelispor was unable to get the same performance as in the first half of the season and so lost the lead in the table. Nevertheless, they ended the season in 4th place in the table and thus achieved the best placement in the club's history. Yılmaz played this season mainly in the regular formations. In the next season, Yılmaz lost his regular place, but occupied with his club places in the table in the upper third of the table.

After Yılmaz had last lost his regular place at Kocaelispor, he moved in the summer of 1994 within the 1st league to the capital city club Petrol Ofisi SK . Here he found it difficult to establish himself as a regular player and ended the season with 15 competitive appearances. Since his club had missed relegation at the end of the season, Yılmaz played half a season in the 2nd division and was loaned to the first division club Eskişehirspor for the second half of the 1996/97 season.

In the summer of 1996 moved to Sakaryaspor within the 2nd Lig . At this club he quickly made it to a regular player and top performer. In his second season for Sakaryaspor he reached with his club at the end of the regular league phase, qualifying for the play-offs of the season. In these play-offs, in which the last promoted team was played by knockout system , Yılmaz's team reached the final. In the play-off final, Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor was defeated 1-0 and promotion to the 1st Lig achieved. Promoted to the 1st league, Yılmaz lost his regular place, he was used in 24 competitive games, including 19 league games. After his club had to relegate back to the 2nd league after a season, Yılmaz went with his club in the 2nd league. In this league he was used in only one league game until the winter break and was loaned to Diyarbakırspor for the second half.

Yılmaz played for Sakaryaspor until the 2001/02 season and then moved to league rivals Sivasspor . With this club he played one season and then continued his career as an amateur football player.

Coaching career

Yılmaz started working as a head coach in 2004. His first activity was at his former club Sivasspor as an assistant coach and assisted İsmail Kartal . Yılmaz followed this head coach at his next coaching stations at Mardinspor and Altay Izmir . In November 2006 he returned to Sivasspor and worked here as an assistant coach to the newly hired head coach Bülent Uygun . He worked with this coach, with whom he had played as a football player at Kocaelispor for many years, until the summer of 2013 and followed his subsequent coaching positions.

In the summer of 2013 he returned to Sivasspor and began to assist head coach Roberto Carlos as assistant coach. For the 2014/15 season, İsmail Kartal took over the position of head coach at Fenerbahçe Istanbul and left Yılmaz as his assistant coach.

In the summer of 2015, Yılmaz took over the second division Giresunspor and thus worked as head coach himself for the first time. Here he resigned from his position in October 2015 and was replaced two days later by his predecessor, Erkan Sözeri .
