Erkan Sözeri (born May 19, 1966 in Ankara ) is a former Turkish football player and coach.
Player career
Sözeri began professional football in 1989 with the then second division club Gaziantepspor . With this club he captured a regular place during the season. At the end of the season they reached the championship of the second division season in 1989/90 and thus rose to the highest Turkish league, which was then known as the 1st Lig league.
After another season for Gaziantepspor, he moved to Trabzonspor in the summer of 1991 within the league . At this club he did not succeed in asserting himself against his direct competitor in the position of left full-back , against Lemi Çelik . So he completed eight league games by the end of the season, six of which he played over the full length of the game. At the end of the season he and his team won the Turkish Football Cup of the 1991/92 season .
In the summer of 1992 he left Trabzonspor after just one year and hired the league competitor Gençlerbirliği Ankara . At this club, he made it into the starting line-up right away and established himself as a key player. During his six years with the capital city, he played with players like Ergün Penbe , Kemalettin Şentürk , Metin Diyadin , Engin Özdemir , İlhan Mansız , Tarık Daşgün , Rahim Zafer , Ali Eren Beşerler , Ümit Özat and Ümit Karan , all of whom would later become important Turkish football personalities should bring. While most of these players developed into shooting stars at Gençlerbirliği and later switched to one of the three major Istanbul clubs Fenerbahçe , Galatasaray and Beşiktaş for a large transfer fee , Sözeri stayed with Metin Diyadin, with whom he would play most of his playing career, Genlerbirliğiğiğiği loyal to. Both players established themselves as the most important performers of their team. In the first division season 1994/95 he finished with his club the best table placement in the club's history for 29 years. One of his most important games made Sözeri on December 20, 1997 in the league game against Fenerbahçe Istanbul: Here they defeated the Istanbul clearly 3-0, with Sözeri scored two goals himself and became the man of the match.
At the end of the season he moved to Fenerbahçe Istanbul together with his teammate Metin Diyadin . Here he was not often used by the German coach Jogi Löw , who instead of Sözeri let the German-Turkish Tayfun Korkut play in the position of the left full-back . After Sözeri was used in only three games in the first half of the season, he was loaned to the second division side Çaykur Rizespor and returned to Fenerbahçe at the end of the season. In the meantime, Rıdvan Dilmen took over as coach. Although Sözeri could not fight for a regular place under this coach and his successor Zdeněk Zeman , he came to regular missions. After Zeman in mid-December 199? was replaced by Turhan Sofuoğlu , Sözeri came to no further competitive set for Fenerbahçe and left the club at the end of the season.
In the summer of 2000 Sözeri moved again together with his teammate Metin Diyadin, this time to the second division club Göztepe Izmir . At this club both established themselves immediately as leading players and played a major role in the fact that the club ended the second division as champions in 2000/01 and thus achieved direct promotion to the Süper Lig . There the club got into great financial difficulties and was the first to be relegated early on. In this environment Sözeri completed 13 league games and ended his playing career at the end of the season.
For the 2018/19 season he took over the second division team Gençlerbirliği Ankara . At the end of April 2019, he took over Giresunspor for the third time in his career
Coaching career
Sözeri started a coaching career a year after the end of his playing career. His first job was to take on the position of assistant coach at MKE Kırıkkalespor and thus assisted his former teammate Durmuş Çolak . A year later he rose to head coach at this club and worked in this role for one season. The following seasons worked for various clubs in the TFF 2nd Lig . In August 2011 he took over the position of assistant coach at the first division club Orduspor and assisted his former teammate Metin Diyadin . After this activity he worked as head coach in succession at Tokatspor , Fethiyespor and Alanyaspor .
In the summer of 2013 he was introduced as head coach at the Süper Lig relegated Orduspor . Following the 36th matchday of the 2013/14 season, Sözeri was released.
In early October Sözeri returned to Orduspor and succeeded Fikret Yılmaz . After just two weeks of activity, he resigned from his position.
In October 2014 he took over Giresunspor and looked after this club until the end of the season. After the end of the contract, there was no further contract extension with this club. So Sözeri left the northern Turkish second division and took over the first division relegated Balıkesirspor for the upcoming 2015/16 season . After the 7th match day of the 2015/16 season, he resigned from his position.
About three weeks after his resignation at Balıkesirspor, he took over his previous club Giresunspor. With this club he then occupied mostly places in the table for the play-off phase of the league until the last game day. On the last day of the match, his team missed the necessary victory for a play-off placement in the home game against Alanyaspor by conceding the 2-2 final result in stoppage time.
For the 2016/17 season, Sözeri was signed as the new head coach of the second division side Adana Demirspor. After only two months he was dismissed from this club and a few days after his dismissal took over the Istanbul league rivals Ümraniyespor, who were in the relegation zone . He quickly led this club to the top of the table.
For the 2017/18 season he took over a first division club in Kardemir Karabükspor for the first time in his career. He was released after six match days.
