occupation

Sehnsucht is a DEFA feature film by Jürgen Brauer from 1990 based on the novella Der Kirschbaum by Jurij Koch from 1984.

action

Sieghart is a hydraulic engineer who is conducting a scientific test well in Lausitz . One day, on an evening of thunderstorms, he gets stuck in his SUV and seeks shelter in a remote farm. Here he is taken in by Ena, a young peasant woman and her fiancé Mathias, who is currently visiting, until the next morning. When he steps back into the living room from his guest room, he sees the two of them standing in front of a small idol hidden in the closet and then goes back to bed. Sieghart immediately fell in love with Ena and confesses his affection to her at the next meeting. But Ena doesn't want to embark on the adventure and asks Mathias to marry her as soon as possible.

On the eve of her wedding, the hen party, she was unable to hide her interest in Sieghart. These feelings are not hidden from Mathias and he invites them to go on a carriage ride, during which he constantly increases the pace. At a nearby lake the carriage crashes and the occupants are thrown into the water. Mathias remains lost forever.

Ena marries Sieghart and when he receives an appointment to an international hydraulic engineering institute in Paris , she follows him. But her husband is so involved in his job that he has less and less time for Ena and it becomes too boring for her to be alone in her hotel room. She walks a lot through the city, keeps thinking of Mathias and therefore finds no rest. When she then also sees her little idol for sale in a shop window, she flees back home to the lake of the event so that she can finally forget it there.

production

Jurij Koch was responsible for the scenario and already wrote the literary model, and the dramaturgy was in the hands of Andreas Scheinert and Manfred Hocke . The filming locations included u. a. Ostro .

Sehnsucht was shot by the DEFA studio for feature films (artistic working group “Johannisthal”) on ORWO color and had its premiere on May 30, 1990 in the Berlin Kino International .

criticism

Henryk Goldberg found in the film mirror that these are actually two films. One takes place in Sorbian and is very beautiful, very poetic, the other, in Paris, is helpless strain.

The lexicon of international films wrote that this film is a drama with an elegiac, resigned undertone that focuses entirely on the contrast between idyllic originality and a change perceived as threatening. It is interesting in view of the social sensitivities within which the film was made, but full of formal clichés and stilted dialogues.
